Title: Blumlein outdoors?
Post by: BCostigan on May 15, 2004, 09:42:05 PM
Was wondering if anyone can comment on how this works outdoors?  Open festi type situation not a shed.

I ran blumlein FOB at Odyssey fest a few weeks ago with the ADKs- it's sooooooo sweet.  Just make sure you're close enough to the sweet spot that the direct sound from the PA can overpower the chattiness from the rear lobes.

So I'm guessing Blumlein OTS at Phish in VT would not work too well?

it might, depending on where the section is and how loud the PA is.

best I can tell, my blumlein tapes sound very similar to XY card tapes but more open and natural sounding.  Kinda split the difference between the focus of a good cardiod tape in the sweet spot and the accurate representation of ambience of a good omni tape.

My decisionmaking process for running blumlein or not (subject to change)

1) is it a damn good sounding room or outdoors?
2) can I get away with running cards or wider?
3) is the crowd going to be really chatty?
4) are there going to be any nasty reflections in the rear lobe (from walls or other structure)?

If the answer to all four is yes, you can probably get away with running blumlein.  Might be worth a try... it's not like there aren't going to be other tapes circulating.

yeah, you're right, I'm retarded.

you don't want chatty crowd or nasty reflections when running blumlein (as if those are ever desireable characteristics).

Hear what I mean, not what I type ;)
