Ugg... ok it's done this a couple more times since I first asked about it (prolly 7 months ago).
My setup:
Oktava MK012 > UA5 powered by 9.6V NiMH RC battery w/ phantom power > Fujitsu C6581 laptop running win 2k, via USB > Soundforge
All of the sudden it will just like freeze and the levels will brickwall, and it won't record anything but static. I can stop the recording and save what it did record but it cuts out to static, and after I stop the recording I get some message like "Microsoft Sound Mapper Error - this device is not compatible" or something stupid like that. My main problem is I can't replicate the error, it just happens randomly. At first I thought maybe it's my power settings because I had my lappy set for the screen to turn off after 3 minutes, but that wasn't it, because now my screen never turns off unless I close it, and I don't think that takes any processing power, it just turns off the backlight.
Has this happened to anyone else and does anyone know how to fix it?
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Also, I'm thinking of investing in a refurb JB3 or other unit to plug into the UA5 as backup... I have an unmodded UA5 though, even if i have it plugged into the usb of the computer, I can't pass through to the optical out from the xlr in, can I? I should be able to go to the RCA out just fine, though, right? I know it's an d > a > d conversion, but I'm just thinking of having it as backup.

Does the UA-5 have an ASIO driver? Have you tried using that instead of the default drivers?

try this
control panel >
sound and multimedia >
audio >
change drop down box from M$ soundmapper to whatever input you are using
Also do this in soundforge...I don't have sf anymore so I don't know how exactly...
Using the M$ soundmapper seems to really screw things up in my experience.
hope this helps

I don't get the option to change microsoft sound mapper there... it's either my yamaha sound or "usb device" - it used to actually say Edirol UA5 but now it only says "usb device" when it's plugged in.

try uninstalling and reinstalling the ua-5 drivers.
if you follow the DIY digi-mod instructions in the archive, you can use the ua-5 without a computer and record to a jb3.
what bit-depth/sample rate are you recording at on your laptop currently?
