Title: rain gear?
Post by: highwayjill on May 29, 2004, 03:34:29 AM
i'll be taping my first festival in about 3 weeks, and since its   tornado/afternoon thunderstorm season over here around tornado alley, i was wondering what i should take with me to keep all my stuff dry, just in case it rains on me.  I'd rather not have any several hundred dollar paper weights courtesy of rain ;)

<edit> looking over my post, and seeing my avitar.. i'm praying that nothing that bad ever happens to me while i'm taping ;)

ummm, first thing first, buy some contractor garbag bags, theyre a lil more heavy than the regular ones, i forget waht mm thick they are, like 7-9mm thick

and then get some tent stakes and some bungie cords to secure the stand wether youre FOB or just in a windy situation

a small umbrella found at wal-mart may be a good thing to have too

and what i always do is, buy the small walmart portable, foldup table too, put the table up, set up equipment however you will on the table, put contractor bag over the table and everything on it(it should fit perfectly over the walmart table), and run your mic cables UP to the table so that no water can get up on the table

ive taped thru some NASTY weather like that, and it hasnt gone anywhere

did i explain that well??

after the small amount of money spent at walmart(5 bux for each the table and umbrella, about 5-10 bux for a BOX of contractor bags-these can make quick friends in the section, and a few bux for tent stakes/bungie cords) and you are pretty much indestructible, and about as w00k pr00f as you can get!!

Do you have a pic or link to the table Bean? I'm interested in this - especially if it's lightweight and $5

umbrella obviosly, i got mine from toys r us, its a radio flyer wagon umbrella, but most i think got ones that clamp to lawn chairs or whatever.  Also, i bring a small towel for one just in case, and for festie's this season, the $.50 rain poncho, as well as some heavy duty garbage bags.  A small tarp also wouldn't be a bad idea, could keep you and your gear out of the mud, and also work for keeping off rain.  what festival you hittin? bonnaroo, wakarusa?

yup, garbage bags and umbrella for the mics.  watch out in the wind though, the umbrella will make a great sail to launch your mic stand into space.  bring stakes and bungee cords, or sandbags, or duct tape, etc.

my rig is heavy enough that it makes a nice weight that i can strap to my stand making it more sturdy, and much much less likely for the stand to go down.  i learned this the hard way last year when the weather picked up i took my bag off the stand and down it went.  kinda funny though despite the spike on the tape.

Yep, you will hear the pitter patter of the rain on the umbrella inbetween songs, it usually isn't a bother during the song.

i think its pretty cool ;)

also, abouit the umbrella thing, i have tried to think of everything dealing w/ nasty weather and taping, heres the quick solution, get an umbrella that has wind tunnel thing, they can be had at wal-mart too i believe in the normal aisles, instead of the camping stuff, only set me back like 10-15 bux, they have an overlapping cut all the way around the thing, wind goes in and blows thru it, you wont hear a thing...

the folding table is in the camping section, you cannot miss them if they have them, and they fold up tiny as hell too ;)

Something else you could use...if you put your gear is a smallish bag are those plastic zip up things that comforters (for your bed) come in.  Work great for light rain...heavy downpour may penetrate the zippers tho.

Ive made a few tapes where the skys opened up and you can hear the pouring rain mixed with the music,  and it does sound kind of cool,  it give you a being at the show feel, like rain is hitting the hood of your pancho
