Title: ADC 20 vs. A/D of a D100
Post by: save on June 01, 2004, 12:39:21 PM
the pre amp i want cost a little bit more that i had planned on spending so i was wondering how some cheap a/d would sound.  i thought about just going straight into my D100, but ADC 20's are going pretty cheap these days.  Eventually i'd like to get a mod sbm1, but that's out of my price range right now.  are there any other cheaper a/d that i'm over looking?

is the ad/20 have a preamp in it or is it a straight a/d converter?

The Denecke AD20 is a preamp and ADC with a minimum gain of 17dB, if memory serves.  If you're running another outboard preamp, you're effectively running two pres and likely will need to attenuate the signal between the outboard pre and AD20.  Pretty good sounding ADC in the AD20, though.

The Graham Patten ADC20 is just an ADC, no preamp.

Personally, I'd [1] skip the AD20 because of the double-preamp issue, [2] pass on the ADC20 - though it yields excellent detail, I find it painfully bright and harsh to my ears, and [3] go with the D100, a really nice ADC IMO.

i've used both an adc-20 and the d100's a/d and i personally prefer the a/d in the d100.  to my ears on my playback system it sounds more natural than the adc-20 which sounds bright and rather unpleasant.

if I couldn't swing one of the *better* sounding a/d's like the mme, 500/1000, 2k I would stick with the d100. Topnotch a/d. Smooth, warm, not harsh at all, I've been consistently surprised and happy the few times I've run analog line in. Imho.

i say stick with the d100 a/d, ive run my v2 line in to the d100 and was pleasantly surprised with the results.  i agree on the adc-20, very bright and a little harsh when i borrowed nicks last summer

I'm happy with the a/d in my m1, although it seems to have gone missing...
