Title: Rec's needed AT853 shock/stand mount options
Post by: Zaphod on June 03, 2004, 09:50:18 PM
Well I need some options

I have a standard mic stand with a 5/8"? adapter, and I need something to mount my AT853's on, that will allow for most of the stereo configurations: DIN,ORTF, and XY.

I know of the one from sound professionals and it didn't strike me as the best solution, as I would like to put them in shockmounts.

Anyone have some suggestions?

Do the Audix mounts allow for XY config? How versitile are they for use with the AT853s?

Ok so the Shure A27M will allow me to mount with the Audix SMT MICRO shock mounts only for XY postioning?

I suppose I will need a different T-bar to mount them in DIN, and ORTF. What are some other rec's AKG universal T bar perhaps?

Oh yeah and if anyone has some links to places with the best prices, please share!

The mounts.  I'm gonna try to make a custom mount for my micros.

I love my mics, not getting rid of them anytime soon. ;)

That's what I thought...  They are sweet looking, gotta hook up some time and see em in person...

Out of curiosity John, what do you find inadequate about the SMT-MICRO mounts?

Are they limited in how the can be used?

I'm just trying to find out if these will suit my purpose.

No, I just find it a bit unnecessary to run the big ass vert bar with my tiny mics. ;)  Nothing wrong with the mounts at all.

Here's how i did my 853s..

1) get big cheap windscreens from a music store. the kind they sell for like 99 cents. Put the AT screens on first (the full body ones, not the ones that just do the capsule), then put the cheap ones over those and zip tie it to the mic

2) I got the AT 8415 shocks off someone in dat heads like 4 years ago. Anyway, the cool thing about these is that the elastic bands that hold the mics in you can take out. So.. Taking the big windsreened mics now, remove the elisatic bands at one end of the shock, and put them back in around the  mic, before you clip it back to the mount, twist it so it holds the mic in securely. do this on both sides of both bands, the mics aint going anywhere once that's done

I just threw the shocks on a T bar and it's worked fine for years now...no complaints except it's a bitch if i wanna unmount them, oh well.

Ok one last question.

If I get a vert bar, can I only use it for XY? Does the vertical space between the mics make it unsuitable for DIN? Or can I get a vert bar and run my mics in most of the stereo configs?

Thanks to everyone who replied +T's all around.

I have used the AT853rx, Audix 1290 mics, and the SMT-MICRO mounts (headed Cliff's way), so I'll throw in my 2 cents.

If you use the AT853rx with the Audix SMT-MICRO on a vert bar, you can only do XY.  Using this mic/shockmount combo on a t-bar instead would probably allow all the other normal configs, DIN, ORTF, NOS.

If you are using the AT8434 mic mounts that comes with the genuine AT853rx, then you can use those with the Shure A27M vert bar to do NOS, DIN, and ORTF, but not XY.  Of course, you'll get no shock protection.

If you cut down the AT8434 mic mounts, they would fit into the SMT-MICRO and allow you to do other configs.  Cost starts to add up if you don't already have a pair of AT8434.

Here's what has worked best for me when using both the AT853rx and Audix 1290.  I made up a miniature vert bar, attached the mics, and placed this assembly into a single AT8410a shockmount.  Not as small a footprint as I got with the Audix mounts, but better shock protection.  Can do DIN, ORTF, and XY with this setup.  Someday I'll post some plans for the mini vert bar.  Not too hard or expensive to make.

Otherwise, morganhalton's windscreen/shockmount idea also sounds like it might work if you use a t-bar.  Finally, if there's a problem with vertical spacing and near-coincident configs, I've not heard about it.  If you use a vert bar, there'll always be vertical spacing.

Did you see my DIY mini mic mounts in the Rig Pictures (http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=13780.msg170179#msg170179). That's a good, cheap way to do it. If you don't want to go the DIY route, I'm actually getting all the stuff together to make a dozen or so sets (with improvements) to sell. There seems to be a market for these and I like building stuff. Just bought a drill press too (always wanted one anyway).

Each set will have a t-bar and two shock mounts. I'm thinking price will be $50 per set and they will look more professional than the DIY version. PM me if you want more info or wait for my big announcement in the Retail Space as soon as my new version is finished.

Well thanks to everyone for some great suggestions. I decided to go with the SMT-MICRO mounts, along with a t-bar.

Matt, I would go with your custom mounts, but I know I am probably going to upgrade in the future, so I knew I'd being needed a t-bar or vert bar anyway. Thanks for letting me know.

+T's!
