Title: Need new mics QUICKLY and maybe a preamp too! Help requested.
Post by: eltimbomofo on February 18, 2023, 08:20:32 AM
I'm under a big time crunch and need new mics and am open to a new preamp as well.  Here are the details:

-I've taped before, but not highly experienced.
-I used Church audio cardioids previously, but they have a short and are useless now.  I prefer to upgrade my sound, but stick to cardioids.  I'm ok with a lateral move if need be.
-I tape stealth with a Sony m10 using 3.5 mm input, I want to stick to that jack size.
-I have a Church Audio preamp, which works fine, but I'm open to buying something new if it is smaller (Church seems bulky to me, but I haven't used anything else) and same or better quality.
-TIME is critical.  I need to receive the new gear by Tuesday, Feb 28th at the latest (I'm leaving for a 7 show road trip the day after)
-My budget is maybe $1200 with a bit of flexibility.

Help me Tapersection, you're my only hope.

The Rode nt4 stereo mic  https://rode.com/en/microphones/studio-condenser/nt4 is a good bang for the buck and sounds good. You can use the xlr outputs or plug right into your m10 with the provided mini plug. It's $529 new or $350-$400 on ebay.

Doesn't look very stealth-able.

I'd also recommend these mics, but pick the low sensitivity mods - they work better for loud shows, especially in clubs.  They are dependable, and can be reasonably stealthed. You might want to get a mic power supply, I have used this one: https://soundprofessionals.com/product/SP-SPSB-10/

PM if you have questions.

Thirded. I've done side-by-side comparisons of the low-sens SP-CMC-4U cards with CA-14 cards, and they are virtually identical. And a *lot* more sturdy. (And agreed re neutrino doing great repair work on Church mics.)

You'll want windscreens as well:

Even though I had recommended the Rode NT4 I would also give the thumbs up for the sound professionals set for low profile recording. I love my pair.

Hi Guys,  Thank you for the suggestions.  They have been very helpful.  I went ahead and ordered the SP-CMC-4U.  What do you recommend for stealthy mounting?  I have always used a Kangol cap and mounted my CA mics on the inside lip of the hat so that they were completely inside the hat, pointing out through the mesh.  The clips on these SP-CMC-4U are bigger and the Kangol won't seem to work.  I open to any and all methods.  Thanks.
