Title: recommendations for jb3?
Post by: sirwalter on June 08, 2004, 12:38:58 PM
Hi
Hate to cross post, but my questions about the jb3 are starting to fall more into this category.  id like to put together a newbie setup that would allow me to both patch in to others and use mics with the jb3.  at first i was leaning towards  ua-5 digimod>jb3, but now it seems that it isnt ideal for patching and isnt bit perfect.  so what would people recommend i purchase for phantom, gain and adc that would let me patch in and eventually add mics (superlux SMK-H8K, studio project c4 or adk sc-t)  thanks for any ideas!

i dont have a jb3 but i have had them patch out from my rig

for patching you dont need a pre or a/d

just need the jb3 and an optical cable, and maybe a coax to optical converter for those times when the digi out is coax.

a coax cable...a 7pin>optical cable would help too for us sony users  ;)

if you wanna go totally cheap, get a 1/8 to 1/8 cable and just go line in...

Seriously no reason to post this again, you'll get the same response.

Get the HOSA and wait on the UA-5 until you get a set of mics.

sorry....just thought my questions were more along the lines of what was being discussed here, and didnt know that was the only answer.

Well it's not the only answer, but it's probably the best one for your situation.  The Mics > UA-5 > JB3 is a great starting rig, but without the mics you really don't need the UA-5.

You may want to also consider just analog patching, and skip the HOSA altogether.

you can use the UA-5 to patch too, it can add color, gain, and A>D conversion from analog signals.  SBD patches can be significantly enhanced by using a UA-5.

The point brought up in the other thread was that since it's not bit perfect, it's not the best situation for patching.  You can add gain and A/D with the JB3 alone...

so did i have the right answer?

sirwalter, it looks like you have your heart set on a ua-5. just pony up and get one already! sheesh! just dont use it to patch!

if i were you i would just get a 1/8 to 1/8 in go line in...adjust levels on the jb3, and see if you like the rigs you hear. you should get a good idea that way.

save up your money for when someone offers a decent mic and preamp package on the yard sale. they come up oftern. such as akg 391's and a w/mod ua-5 combo. you will save money on the combo...trust me!

have a grateful day

AKG390>DMIC-20(todmod)>jb3/M1/D100/D8
akgC1000>DMIC-20(todmod)>jb3/M1/D100/D8
KM184>UA-5>jb3/M1/D100/D8
tons of options, but as already stated start with a cheap DAT or a JB3 (depending on your money situation then worry about the rest later.  Listen to a bunch of others recording and pick a setup that sounds good to your ears, you can always upgrade/trade/change your gear down the road.
