you might also encounter ROC (Right of Center) and LOC (Left of Center) and BTP (Back to Paul -- another way of saying FOB).  Good luck deciphering all our garbage.

Sir Walter, moelinks.com has a great site written by Jon McLennen tucked deep within it's massive archives that might help you out.

The Incomplete Guide to Deciphering Those Confusing Combinations of Letters and Numbers that Seem All Too Important to Some People (http://www.moelinks.com/random/source/)

"The goal of this little endeavor is to help in aiding moe.rons in finding out exactly what

AfDm 44.1 3:21:00 scms=00 FOB- Front Left@SBD B&K 4021s (~12')>Apogee AD 1000 (+20)>HHb (m)

means. Not only what it means, but how it affects you and those you love. For those of you who are not initiated into the Occult of Anal Tapers, OAT if you will, this will be your crash course in reading source info. "

You'll find the equipment critiqued is a little outdated, but I think it has a nice section describing source lineage acronyms.  If I ever find the time, and get Jon's permission, I'm going to petition to revamp the hell outta it.

Anyone ever notice how some tapers are *very* generous when describing their recording location as DFC?  I've seen people describe their location as DFC when they're 20' off-center in a medium sized venue!  ::)

You could also, in a similar vein, sorta "debunk" DFC as being a meaningful attribute as sometimes in smaller venues the sweet spot is not "on center".

image center is not necessarily dfc in any situation. it's probably a good starting point but you should walk the room a bit to find the true image center...

Also good feedback, though the image center for the opening band won't necessarily be the image center for the headliner, or for the following night's shows, etc.  At least not in my experience.

I haven't seen any fallacies yet, only facts. ;D

I must've misinterpreted these comments.

Although with all the talk of DFC not always being the sweet spot, it could be argued that DFC being always the best is somewhat of a fallacy.

To bad most of us tapers don't know the scientific equation that always equals sweet spot.  :)

even if we knew the equations for the sweet spot, we'd have to convince the ppl that have those spots to hit the road!!

I've gone so far as to list my spot as 12" or 18" ROC - if I can hear and see that it's not truly DFC, then I make sho to be ackerate.

while you can get the theoretically sweet spot using the equilateral triangle method it is all theoretical. As many have said previously in this thread actual image center is not always physical center.

I've had some interesting experiences with dfc not necessarily being image center. I ran about 2 feet roc for mc5 and seemed to get a nicer image than stepping into dfc, a little boom and less detail there. Not the first time I've noticed that for sure.

personally, I use the 2 foot rule,  I don't list sources as 18" LOC.  :)

Do you use that kind of estimation for the ladies, too? ;)

Also funny how everything gets listed as FOB, even if the mics are 2 ft in front of the board vs way up front in the sweet spot...

gotta list a distance from stage to give a perspective

my perception is sometimes altered at shows and i am unable to guesstimate a distance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't FOB simply mean "Front of Board?"

Ok, makes sense.  But in every other situation it's simply front of board, right?
