Title: Which USB powerbank and cable to power a mixpre 6II??
Post by: swordfish on August 18, 2024, 04:53:41 AM
I wonder what people use nowdays to power the unit and which cable.

I tested all my larger powerbanks without sucess(Ravpower PB/Talentcell PB which I use with my R44).  But both units failed and the display showed "usb power source low".

I guess I need new PB and a new cable.  Any advice will be good advice...

Thanks in advance!

I use a Talentcell Rechargeable 12V/11000mAh 9V/14500mAh 5V/26400mAh DC Output Lithium ion.  I think many of us with the MP6ii do (?).  I have a custom DC -> Hirose cable with the SDevices Hirose sled.  Most of us don't (!), but the locking Hirose sold me over a USB connection.

In my opinion, the most reliable USB power bank method is to use a bank that has a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) output on it, along with a sturdy USB-C to USB-C cable. I use a 6-inch right-angle to right-angle cable that fits between my mixpre-6ii recorder and the power bank tucked into the recorder bag outside pocket. I’ve been using this for years without incident. I keep an MX-Lmount with two small L-mount batteries on the back as backup, but have never needed to fall back on them. I have several brands and sizes of power bank, and they all fully power (green rather than orange battery display) the recorder with their USB-C PD output.

I use this Anker 10,000mAh for single shows - never had an issue.

I have an older much larger Anker 20500 for longer days and festies.

I've had good luck with Anker batteries.

Can you please provide me a link to the cable you are using.  Thanks to all for the detailed information so far.  I will test the Anker PowerCore 10000mAk Redux, Powerbank USB-C Power Delivery (18W) power bank.

Cheers, SF

I use the Anker 535/537 Powerbanks with my MixPre 6 II with the USB-C cable that comes with the Powerbank - no problems. I‘ll get approx 4h running time with 15%-20% capacity (4 mics phantom powered). Alternatively I use the UGREEN Nexode 140W Power Bank with the USB-C cable that comes with the Powerbank - no problems, too and running time comparable to the Anker Powerbanks.

At home when I'm using the MixPre6 as my daily-driver sound interface, I keep the original Sound Devices Y-cable plugged into my computer on the data side, and a A/C powered USB power bank on the power side.

In the field, I only use USB-C to USB-C, as that's required in order to power more than two channels of "Kashmir" preamps.
I carry a USB-A to USB-C cable just in case, but that would only give me two mic preamps, the other signals would have to come in at line level, or I suppose in a pinch I could use the non-Kashmir preamp on channels 5-6 if phantom was not required.

Running a new pair of ~10k Anker PD bricks, as my old large ~20k Anker brick is over 6 years old, and still working great, but I don't want it to fail in the field.

Received the Anker Power bank and it is charging at the present....will report back if it powers the Mixpre 6II or not!

The anker battery works fine with cable that was inside the box.  I bought 2 PB so I have an extra if I tape 2 days in a row.

If I recall it correct, I saw a posting a while ago, about an 90 degree USC-C cable to be used with an mixpre 6II.  I searched for for it, but I can't find it

This is the USB-C cable I use between my power banks and Mixpre-6ii It is exactly the right length to run between the main compartment and outer pouch of my Orca bag.

Thanks for the link, but I am situated in Germany and Amazon Germany hasn't lsited this item.  In the meantime I bought 2 cables thru Amazony with
90 degree plugs.  The plugs work great, but the cables are to sturdy and will damage the USB C conncetion of the recorder.

Still wonder where to find the thread with the flat right angle cable in this forum.

I have several of these cables in different lengths, they're really useful to avoid strain on connectors

I bought this one and the cable is really sturdy as well, but the plug sits flat with the recorders case and I can tape it pretty well to keep it in place.

That right angle looks like the wrong angle to me!
It's 90 degrees, but looks like the casing will stick out past the top or bottom of the MixPre case.

This flat thing is cool though. Does it block the power switch on the mixpre?

It does stick out, therefore I can tape the plug to the case of the Mixpre from 2 sides. After that it aint moving at all! so less stress for the USB-C connection of the mix pre.

No, not at all. And the connector and cable are both slim enough that it can be inserted either facing up or down, depending how it would best suit your bag setup.
