Title: 5/8-27 locking nut?
Post by: Brian Skalinder on June 19, 2004, 07:38:28 PM
I've clamped to my Bogen Superclamp a bunch recently both with and without my gooseneck extension.  With the gooseneck extension, I can rotate the mics to get them angled towards the stage properly.  Without the extension, and since the stud which slots into the Superclamp is hex and doesn't allow infinite rotating adjustment, I have trouble getting the mics angled just right.  Solution: rotate the clamp, not the stud/mics, to get the mics aligned with the stage.  However, I'm not always able to rotate the clamp due to the physical layout of the object to which I'm clamping.  So...

Does anyone know where I can pick up a 5/8"-27 locking nut like the ones on the Shure A27M vert bar?

FWIW, I checked some of the usual online vendors with no luck.  I'm guessing I'll have to call Shure directly and try to finagle them into sending me one, but figured I'd ask in case someone knows where to pick one up.

Brian,
I bought mine from this place. http://www.wesdooley.com/aea/Modular_Microphone_Stands.html
AEA-LR, $2.00 each.  Great service, fast shipping.

It is very easy to fix the Superclamp.  Get a file/Dremel and round off the hex end.  Eventually you will be able to rotate the extension bar 360 degrees.  Get the roatation you need and lock it down with the set screw.  I can send you some pictures if you need them.

Yeah, I've considered hacking the stud, too.  No need for pics.  Still not sure which I'll do - locking nuts or hack the stud.  Thanks, Kevin!

You don't want to actually hack the whole stud.  If you do, the lock screw has nothing to bite down on.  Just round off the hex edges until it will turn....best mod I've done to any of my gear.

Yeah, I know what you meant.  I meant hack in a generic sense - I didn't mean to suggest I'd hack the whole darn thing, just round the edges until it spins in the female slot.

Sounded like you knew what I meant, just wanted to make sure.  Word!
