Title: AT853 distortion?
Post by: Steelcorner27 on June 26, 2004, 02:49:40 PM
Ok I having kinda a weird problem with my Sound Pro AT853 (full size caps) using the SP-SPSB-1 9v batt box now when I run them thru my MD they work perfectly no distortion at all now when I run them thru my d8 Im getting distortion mic in and line in alike triing them with and without a -20db attenuator, So I went ahead and sent my D8 to oade brothers for the pre amp mod and still the same problem. Now your thinking something wrong with the D8..nope I hook my CSB's or my Sony mic to it and it works just fine..so then its the batt box, no I used the sony mic with it and again the AT's work fine with the MD.

So what is the deal is the AT853 and Sony D8 just a bad combo Im pulling my hair out here, why do the work with the MD and not the DAT? WTF

Help!

Do I need the phantom 48v for the full size caps to work right?

What record setting were you using with the MD? SP LP2 LP4? I am thinking that the limited frequency response of the MD may have cut off any low frequency distortion of the AT853s with the battbox...so you were getting roll off without knowing it. Since you now have dat you are getting the full frequency range and the full gambit of distortion.

My MD is a old MZ-R37 so I dont even know what the setting is I just set the level at or around 12db So in what your saying there is a problem with the AT mics

you should really use the -20dB pad with min-in.

well i put in a couple more hours of testing and have come to the conclusion that these mics are just to sensitive for mic in Ive tried with and without -20 same results Ive called Oade brothers they say with the modified pre amp they put in I shouldnt even need -20 with most mics but had not tested my type. I can now run my csb's up to just before 0db without brickwalling with the new preamp but not the AT's so I guess Ill just go line in at the shows tonight and wait to hear back from anyone who can solve this mystery.

Thanks
Brad

Wait, you're running the Mics > batt box > Mic In on the Dat???  When I had this rig I *never* ran mic in, always line in.  Mic in would always clip my deck.

Oh, try plugging the mics directly into the mic in of the md.  Not at a show, just testing at home or something.  See if you still have problems.  If so, it may be the mics.  If not, probably the battery box...

have you considered trying batt. box > attenuator >mic in?

or isn't there a battery box with an attenuator switch on it made for just this purpose? or am I hallucinating again....  :o

no need to run the 4061s mic in.  Plenty of tapers run 4061 > BB > DAT fine with line only
