got a large paycheck and i THINK i'm going to join team neumann =)
would be team schoeps (mmmmMMM mk41s) but hey, out of my league.
so i think a pair of km184s will do me well :-D
heres hoping.
oh yah will these work good in the studio as well ? (replacing the sm57 for example)

oh jesus yes these are great in the studio. i'm not HUGE on them for vocals, however for overheads you are going to have a hard time beating these.

save some more scratch and get the mk41's if that is what you really want

Maybe price wise...but as far as sound...you're on the right path.
:-)
Stay away from the darkside...

If you want Schoeps, save for the Schoeps. They are completely different mics. I've had both and I'm happy where I ended up. If you like the Schoeps "sound" but you can't afford them, then look into MBHOs. They're much closer in sound and for about the same price you can get some actives.

For up close cards and subcards, I prefer the Neumanns. But the AK50 caps got nothing on the MK41s.
Where are you doing most of your taping? That might make a difference.
To get started with the money that you have, the 184s are a great mic. I used mine for a long time and pulled plenty of good tapes. The only reason I got less when I sold them is I bought the 184s new. If you find a reasonable deal on used 184s, you can use them a couple of years, pull good tapes and then get most of your money out of them if they are well cared for.

jonny have you tried the EWsr77's as overhead mics yet? ;D
the 184's are very nice on acoustic string instruments as well if you don't have any sweet LD's in your arsenal, FWIW.
