Title: need advice... configs and setup...
Post by: justink on June 29, 2004, 06:52:41 PM
here's the situation:

i'm in the pit, row 2 (not sure of exact seat #) for DMB at the woodlands.

this is what i have to work with:

mc012 (card), and some nice stealthy soundpro omni's w/ bat box
mixpad 4, and maybe a mp-2
d7

would it be possible to maybe run a 4 mic mix? would it be worth it that close to the stage?

what height should i run the mics? what config?

thanks for any help!

try it if you want.  Personally, i'd probably run the octava's>mp2>d7 if thats what you have to work with.  But if you are 2nd row in the center, they will shut down your stand unless you run it at head height.  So from that position you might almost have to do the SP>BBox>D7  it is possible to run a 4 mic mix, if you use your SP omni's i'd space them or a j disc, then run maybe an ORTF with the mc012's, run them both into the mixpad > MP2 > D7.  That would work, and it would be interesting to hear the results.

that could work... how should i input the batt box into the mixpad?  does it have a stereo 1/4 inch in?

would it be worth it to run from the second row?  unless i'm on an extreme side to go for the stack, i'm not sure itwould work.  because honestly, the view is awesome... but the sound sucks ass down there.

i wouldn't run the sound pro mics.  Certain sound pro mics when run off a battery box are prone to distortion, which may ruin the entire recording.  Plus mixing on the fly would be a pain

just to throw it in:

i ran sp bmc-1 -> spsb-2 -> md for 9.20.00 at Sandstone, bela opening, 2nd row, head height and it smokes pretty damn good...

i'll have to get this one out there, it's uncirculated as of now.. forgot i had that one :X

if you're center, forget it probably. if you're in the pit on the sides i'd probably say 12' + and x/y or a-b. that's probably what i'll be doing in chula vista.

damnit people need to run head height center, i've got 2 nashville shows (i think, i know one for sure) and the sandstone ones that ound good.

try it! you'll LIKE IT.

i may try that at head height,  i'm just worried about too much crowd noise though... but if i send it up on a stand, i'll probably get hassled for blocking views!

head height for dmb? with a crowd of 20,000+? lol good luck

no luck needed, really. you'd be surprised what a nice "hey guys, if you want to hear what you heard one day, just scream the other way from my mics" would do.

now i can't prove this as i'm not going to be able to tape a merriweater. :(

I ran 5th row center at 7 ft. for Hershey last year and the screaming and chatter is intolerable. The quality of the music is definitely there but  I wouldn't try it again if I cared more about the tape than enjoying the center seats. Since it was my only DMB show last year, I just stayed center and said screw the tape.

woodlands #1 will be my lone show for the year too...  so i really would like to make a nice tape, but i want to enjoy the 2nd row seats thoroughly!
