I'm currently running Schoeps mk41 in a Kangol hat and am risk to wind damage during outdoor events. This past Sunday I caught The Black Keys in Akron, open air show, and got some wind damange on the tape. Nothing is horribly annoying, but I'd love to avoid it if I can.
One idea I thought about was stitching some foam in the front part of the hat, inside the brim. Until I decide differntly, I will run the mics in the brim of the hat. I have loops sewn in (thanks to Skalinder's idea) to hold the mics in place. But currently, I have no protection from the wind.
When I ran my ATs, I had windscreens on them so I had double the insulation.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
Thanks,
Jeff

what pre are you running?
does it have an HPF?
why no small windscreens with the schoeps?

Sonosax modded into a Lemosax.
I'm only a couple months into my new gear and am still learning/figuring things out as I go along. I figured even small windscreens for Schoeps in a hat would be large. Am I wrong?
Sorry, HPF?
Thanks for the quick reply!

You could always go for a thicker Kangol - instead of the Vent Air, get one of the felt ones...
HPF = high pass filter

sonosax eh? sweet!
try that low cut filter(same as hpf). at 18db/per octave @ 70Hz that should greatly help with wind noise. probably lose a little low end but hell i'd rather not have that than have nasty wind noise :)
edit: +t for the lemosax! love that piece of gear. i listen to skalinder's APC tape from cleveland all teh time!

Thanks to Skalinder for the gear choices!! Loved his APC recording and the results of our Waifs recording when I was the stand. ;D Those two instances played well into my upgrade choice.
Thanks for the hint on using the low cut filter. I was hoping I'd not have to use that - I think I accidentally had it on during my June Dylan recordings. Some of my best pulls yet. They are a little weak in the low-end, but are quite tasty.
Whatever I figure out I'll post back for future reference. And of course, other ideas are happily accepted.

well there's another option if you like doing post production mastering of your tapes.....
record a show without the hpf and then custom EQ your recording after you transfer it. it's a much more timely process but your custom eq will no doubt sound better than 18dB/per octave at 70Hz.

Thanks dude! I think I'll try that option before flipping on the low cut filter. I want to do as little post-processing as possible, but thank you also to S_TL-Taper for your hint on raising it with a custom EQ.

no problem glad we could help!
