Title: Lack of 24/96 24/48 downloads?
Post by: JNT on July 10, 2004, 08:30:43 PM
Other than the 3 obvious reasons:

1) larger file size/longer download time
2) few people currently taping high resolution audio.
3) fewer people capable of turning the downloads into DVD

I'm wondering why I don't see more people offering high resolution audio downloads on bt.etree.org, STG, LMA etc.

I definatly see more offers for SHN/FLAC files of this material by snail mail than downloads.

I have on bt.etree.  Not much interest and many that did download didn't realize they couldn't burn cd's with the 24bit files and/or didn't have 24-bit soundcards to play from their computer.

4) people don't have playback systems worthy of 24bit.

Nothing is stopping me from downloading it (except no bands I like get recorded in 24bit) but I don't have shit to play it back with and be able to tell the diff.

my playback isn't worth 16bit let alone 24 bit.  I have access to a few playbacks that can apreciate it but it is not my normal listening experience.  In five years the 24 bits folks are pullin now will be highly sought after but most don't understand that now.  Keep up the high quality work, even if no one understands it now.

+T for the 24bit folks

this will change slowly over the next few years, once a cheaper way of doing HD recording is introduced, 24/96 will take off.

You can always search by my last name (DeNardo) on archive.org. Everything I've taped is 24-bit, unless I was going super low profile/stealth.

i did a DVD-A B&P for like 20 people on the ezboard... what a riot. despite me stating numerous times this was not video, would not play on a conventional dvd player, etc...  only 5 people sent me discs. 2 were other ts.com members who could no doubt play the dvd-a's and weren't clueless. three were people who ignored about 15 different warnings and eventually emailed me back saying "these won't play" "how come the screen is black" etc. etc.

as for BT downloads, i don't see the point - once the same nimrods figure out it's useless to them they'll drop off midway through the session, making everyone's download slo down.

I have been doing 24 bit for a while now but after post production I go down to 16 for circulation. At this time I dont keep 24 bit archives accept for multitrack sessions I have. But those are always 10-20gigs anyhow so they sit on harddrive and DVDR. 24/96 is kinda big :o ya know...

i taped 24/48 for about 1.5+ years and finally got out of it for a couple reasons...
1. too much time spent converting it for easy listening/trading
2. too much time spent archiving 24bit flacs on multiple cd's
3. too much hard drive space being used up
4. no demand for the files yet as most people's playback systems won't support it, neither did mine!

the good thing is, now there are more/other people getting into this game and i can count on 24-bit recordings going on at many shows...eventually playback systems will be upgraded and i'll have plenty of stuff ready to release from "way back in the day" ;) ...etc etc etc
