Title: taping problem from last night I cant trace..
Post by: andrewkw on July 23, 2004, 12:36:39 PM
I dont stealth too often so figures something would go wrong. I was taping alice cooper at the molson amphitheatre, and I thought I had pretty decent levels and a decent recording but when I got home and transfered the tape there is constant static :(  My setup is dpa 4061 > power supply (mini out) > -11db attenuator > D7 (mic in).  I have run this before without problem and what bothers me is that I cannot get the problem to happen again at home.  I figured maybe it was a bad tape and its just digi noise but the tape seems fine as i did all my tests on the same tape.  I think it probably was a lose connection however I cannot get the static to be present at home after losing each connection it either records fine or not at all.  It almost sounds like its clipping but even during the quiet parts the static is present.

Any ideas how I can be sure this problem doesnt happen again?  I would like to figure out for sure what the problem is so I can make sure it doesnt happen at the next show I go to.

A 9 second clip is attached sorry so small but i dont ahve anywhere to upload off hand.

thanks

where did you have the mics placed?  in a hat, shirt, wherever?  is the problem in both channels?

the mics were placed in a hat and yeah it is both channels unforunatly otherwise a mono mix would have been ok...

A shot in the dark, but how long has it been since you replaced the batteries in your power supply? Mine went bad earlier this month, stuck in a new 9v, and voila, problems gone...

Well, at lower db levels it might not show up - I had to wait for the next concert to see if I was right. If it's on both channels then I doubt it's a connection - maybe dirty heads, shedding tape too? Good luck...

yeah, I am betting if your power supply uses a battery, it needs to be replaced.   Probably wouldn't show up just recording at home.

i will try changing the battery, the next show I tape i'll be running my gefells so i can probably test the dpas during the opening band with a fresh battery.

thanks!

If you got a multimeter by chance try testing out the voltage on your old one too to see what it was.
