I only use Duracell ULTRA's in mine and easily make it through a standard 3 hour, 2 set show. I had a bad run using regular Duracell and Energizer regular batteries, so I would suggest staying away from those. I also bought a pair of Powerex rechargables and had hoped those would get me through a regular show, but they are only reliable for about 1 hour.
As for gain I run at about 11:00, Lo gain with Schoeps cmc64's.
hope that helps.

sweet. i'm gonna try all those options. i would love to run recargeables but i have only seen several that are about 250mAH. they may do better than standards but probably not gonna make it for a real long set.
thanks guys for all the help.

I typically run regular batteries through the Sax and have had little problems. They typically last close to 3 hours. I think Im going to try two 9.6volt RC batteries because I want a rechargable source that can last. The RC batts have 1000mAh. Should be good for a long set.
As for the gain I set it around 10 o'clock, hi gain and depending upon the music I may or may not cut the Low Frequency.
