Title: Stealth Mics

First off - thanks for all of your patience & suggestions to my multitude of newbie questions - I'm willing to do my homework but I sorely need advice from users of these mics too.  For stealth recording in a bar or small auditorium situation which of the following mics would generally produce superior recordings:


SP-CMC-8 - SOUND PROFESSIONALS - PREMIUM AUDIO TECHNICA SLIMLINE CARDIOID STEREO MICROPHONES

SP-CMC-4 - SOUND PROFESSIONALS - PREMIUM AUDIO TECHNICA STEREO MICROPHONES

SP-CMC-10 - SOUND PROFESSIONALS - PREMIUM AUDIO TECHNICA SLIMLINE HYPERCARDIOID STEREO MICROPHONES

SP-CMC-14 - SOUND PROFESSIONALS - PREMIUM AUDIO TECHNICA SLIMLINE SUB-CARDIOID STEREO MICROPHONES

i'd say

When stealthing, you'll get more crowd noise using an omni-directional mic.  A more directional mic will eliminate some chatter and make a better recording than an omni if you tape at a distance from the sound source.  However you need to be careful with mic placement to take advantage of the benefits that a cardioid or hypercard set offers.

I have a pair of giant squid omni-directional mics stealth mics which have served me well up for sale in the yard sale for $100 with a battery box & switchable bass rolloff.  The good thing about omni's is that you can turn your head and move without fear of losing the recording consistancy.

Not necessarily, because of the fact that your head is there. :)

well not completely around or go get a drink, but you know what i mean, you don't have to worry about moving your head to the side for a second or two as much as you do with hypers or cards even

Hm...I'm still not sure I agree - I run omnis and it's definitely noticeable if I turn my head or look down while I'm recording...

I've got a pair of the SP-CMC-10s for sale, with a flexible tbar for stand taping as well.

might be the different capsule.  I mean its noticable to some degree as would every movement and position, but not to as great a degree as cards I think.  I ran at853's and then these and there is a big difference between how I have to stand and hold my head between the cards and the squids.  Anyhow I liked them alot in all situations.  we can agree to disagree   :P

the 6/8/10/12/14 all use the same mic body (ES943?), just different caps

the 4 uses the AT853 body and it too has interchangable caps.  On paper, the AT853s are better except for size.  Either way, hypers would be the cap of choice due to versatility.
