Title: Edirol warm-mod UA-5 / FA-101 comparison
Post by: Phil on August 01, 2004, 11:28:33 AM
Alright, lemme know what source you like better.  Both were from the same AKG 481's at String Cheese Incident 7-29-2004.  It's a tough call to me, and I will post the souce info after the poll has been ran for awhile.  Also feel free to make a guess as to which source is from which pre-amp.  Here is the link to the 124mb zip file that contains 2 tracks from each source. --> www.shnmusic.com/Comp.zip (http://www.shnmusic.com/Comp.zip)

I like "B" better, really close though.  I'm gonna guess that this is the W-mod??  It seems that "B" has a bit more low end.  +T for the new FA-101!  Too bad it doesn't seem to pass opti w/out the puter :'(.

Alright.. alright.  love  da boobies..   :o  Source A is the FA-101 > laptop,  Source B is the w-mod UA-5 > jb3. I personally like the fa-101 sound better on my playback system ( 2001 nissan maxima (bose)), scooter was using a much more advanced system so he could prolly be a better judge and he likes the w-mod.  I wish more peeps would vote! or comment.

phil;
to my God given listening devices, source A sounds tighter and more defined. i sorta cheated and opened them on CoolEdit and looked at the wave layout first. the dynamics of source A was better as well.

playback hardware: computer>maudio 2496>presonus hp4 pre>senn. hd580

they are so very close. I noticed some more definition in the upper frequencies with sample a, but sample b had a warmer low end.
other than that, they sound almost the same.

i am listeining from my laptop (dell inspiron 8500 > vx pocket > sennheiser hd280

if i had to choose, i'd say sample b.

This battery from wal-mart is bad ass, it will charge the fa-101 for about 5-6 hours, and charges in about 4 hours.  It's small taboot.  FYI-  you have to switch the + and - end of the "L" tip from rat-hack, similar to the ua-5.  http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=19338.0
