Title: Windscreen Question
Post by: som on August 03, 2004, 11:55:28 AM
Obligatory disclaimer: This might be a stupid question.

Ok, I record with SP-CMC-8's (the Sound Professionals Premium Slimline Cards, basically modded AT ES943/C's). I usually record stealth with the mics in my hat or clipped to my glasses. Sometimes, though, I use a stand with the AT AT8438 mic mounts sold by Sound Professionals. It looks like this:

I usually use the little windscreens that came with the mics, but I have had tapes ruined by excessive wind noise. My question (finally): can I take a full size windscreen and put it over the mic and the end of the mount? Basically just stick it on the end of the mount. Would this muffle the sound or cause any problems? Does any one else use large windscreens with mini mics?

Thanks,

Scott

I think that would work fine.  Don't run both windscreens (the ones for the at's and the larger ones), as that *could* affect the sound.  I'd try a pair of the big DPA screens if you're going outdoors a lot.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I guess the Audix are roughly the same size as the AT's.

You should probably secure the windscreens somehow (rubber bands, maybe?) so they don't rub against the mics and show up on the tape.
