Title: DIY UA-5 digimod failure????
Post by: Tye on August 09, 2004, 04:22:53 PM
I tried to digimod my UA5 by myself and I could not get the solder to take at all. I know the soldering iron is good, the solder and the flux is good also.
I was told that it is because the eyes that you need to solder the jumper wire to  is made of copper and it will not take. I told this guy that several people had did it succesfully here on this site and he was confused. This guy worked at company for over 10 years and all he did was solder microboards he gave it a shot and it still would not take. What are we doing wrong? I just got a JB3 and I'm itchin to run it via optical!!
                               thanks
Also should I just lay the wire on the eye and solder or should I stick it in the eye then solder. Or does it matter at all?

Are you tinning the wire properly?  I used a peice of CAT5 wire.  Mine stuck instantly w/ just a little bit of flux and solder.  What wattage iron you using?

CLEAN IT.  You prolly haven't cleaned enough of the epoxy cover off.  You should see copper, not green.  You should be using flux, and you should be using a low wattage iron with 60/40 or better solder.  If none of this make sense, send it to someone that understands, or you will have a pile o junk on your hands...

I just checked out what it takes, and if you have trouble, I could do it for you (I have a lot of experience with a soldering iron).  Let me know if you'd like any help. :)

Also, try using a very fine tip soldering iron.  In these cases when the components and connections are soo sooo small, it helps a lot to be more precise.
