Title: Outdoor taping distances?
Post by: aberg on August 17, 2004, 09:31:23 PM
I'm going to be taping an outdoor festival.... and I think right up front the crowd will obviously be really packed in... how far is too far away? I want to keep my gear away from the crowd as much as possible, but also not be so far away that I can't enjoy the show... what's a good safe distance usually? By the board?

depends on the venue.  Where is it, someone might have been there before.  I say go with what you think.  If you really wanna stay back, the easiest way is to stack tape if they have lawn stacks.  I'd say FOB at the least if they allow it, and its usually not too bad.  good luck man.

FOB can be anywhere though... like.... what if I'm behind the board? there aren't lawns.. it's just a festival in a field with a big stage.... i'm not sure how far back the soundbaord booth is....

triangulate the distances between the stacks, and find the equidistant point for your mics in the field.
generalized theory ^

Moke...so what your saying is, if the left and right speaker are say, 20ft apart, then you'd want to be in the center, 20ft back right?

Actually you'd want to be a little closer than 20 feet back.  If they're 20 feet apart, you want to be 20 feet from each stack, which would put you at 17.23 feet back from the center (if I remember my geometry correctly).

This is just if you want to go with Moke's theory. ;)

Where are you taping?

Alright, that's what I like to hear... I'm taping at the Evolve Festival in Nova Scotia, Canada... The Slip, Spearhead, Vorcza Trio, and some good canadian talent.... I'll probably setup right next to the soundboard tent/booth since there will be less of a crowd there and I'm sure the booth will be setup in a location with good sound so they can do quality mixing, etc. Is that a decent plan?
