Title: Home stereo sound card rec.
Post by: super-phat-al on August 19, 2004, 02:08:30 AM
i want a soundcard that i can run a line out into my stereo and and be able to have either an optical or coax input that doesn't resample.  also if it was external that would be nice, but it can't be the ua-3.  thats what i have and the problem is that it produces a lot of extraneous noise that i find very annoying.

if you are just taking the digi out then go with the audiophile.  one suggestion to get rid of the noise might be to get an apple airport express and run optical out into your stereo.  i cant garuntee that it wont resample, but with it being a part of a base station and not a part of your machine it should cut down on that noise significantly.  not to mention less cabling

Aren't there issues getting the audiophile to "play well" as a straight analog playback card?  I ended up using my audiophile as my digital interface and using the turtle beach card that came with my pc for analog purposes due to issues I was having in this regard.

I used to run analog out w/my audiophile card to a reciever.  It sounded "ok" at best, IMO.  What sounded real nice was a stock Edirol UA-5.  Feed it a signal via USB and then let it do DAC duties.  It was a big improvement, imo.
I think you can probably find one on ebay for $225 or so.  Not too much more than the AP external  box.

get yourself a DAC...

here's one that gets really good reviews for a decent price...

I miss my Bel Canto a lot, going to go the digi sony amp route next but I was looking at this one... seems like a good deal, save up for the power supply though!

a straight DAC doesn't help him though as he is wanting to run out of his PC, so he'd still need a soundcard w/digi out supporting his resolution needs.
That is where the UA5 rocks because it is a DAC w/a USB "in".

I used the Waveterminal U2A for a while and then began developing driver conflicts in Windows XP.
I like the M-audio audiophile USB.  I use the digital out to my receiver and it sounds very good.  I haven't tried the analog outs, however.
