Would a conversion work going:

D8 > 7 Pin Optical > U2A > CDWave > FLAC

yes.. that setup works.. i've used both the optical and the coax on the u2a without any problems(depending on your comp. setup).. bitperfect? dunno ..but ive been using the u2a for about 4 years for all my transfers..
