Title: mme knob static issue....direct from Roger at Apogee.
Post by: marc0789 on August 30, 2004, 10:28:47 AM
It's a little publicized grounding problem. Apparently when they built the thing, they failed to properly ground the knobs to the rest of the unit...the static is the result.

The solution, supposedly, is to install a spring behind each knob to ground them. They will send you the springs if you call. Haven't done it yet myself.

im willing to bet its more of a wear and tear issue, ive havnt experienced this with my
mme, if i ever had the problem, ill make sure to give apogee a call

not a wear issue from what I was told. i'd imagine different units spec out slightly different, I suppose a micron difference could affect grounding. another way to deal with this is to always start out running hot so you never have to turn up. turning down has not produced the problem in my experience.

it has a couple of issues?  what the hell?  didnt you go through like 3 of them yourself?  there is a significant power issue, there is the coax issue, there are the spring issues, that stupid jumper shit, a poorly designed box (shape wise), and honestly, for the cost, it sounds just OK.  The more I listen to it the more displeased I am.  For 900 bucks (used) I can think of a number of different pre's that you could run straight into a dat deck that would sound better and leave you some change leftover.

This was a big mistake on Apogee's part.

Nah, I went through just one of them, I just broke the thing three times.  Apparently there is a power issue with it, where if it doesn't get exactly what it wants, it fries the main board.  The one thing I did like the most about it was the sound, when run line-in.  However, I can see your point and will now stop talking.

I have only used a minime once.  it was at a cowboy junkies show this summer and the first few songs were very quite.  you can here the static where I raised the levels.  listening to the tape I didn't know what it was till someone posted about it.

funny, it was at junkies 7/21 that I first noticed it, while turning up during the unexpected acoustic encore.

I went back and listened very carefully to some of tapes I did using the mini-me, though I can only really hear it during level adjustments during quiet parts of the recording I find it ridiculous that its there at all...talk about poor design....

I experienced the same issue with the original Rev A unit I purchased and then the replacement Rev B model Apogee sent after the Rev A crapped out.
I ended up selling my Mini-Me and downgraded to a UA-5 and have found the Edirol to be a much better unit.
