This is about as evenly matched of a comp as you can get...

v2>mod wins, I bet. if you like some warmth and punch in your recordings, that is.
-
it's not a mod though...
-
then v3 wins. stock sbm-1 = shitmapper. :-X

I ran this test using my V2-SBM1 and a borrowed V3 (thanks Damon). I recorded two nights of Panic at Constitution Hall, same config, same seating position. The only difference was V3 vs V2-SBM1.
My initial impression was that the V3 tape sounded a little bit thin and cold, as if something was missing. The SBM tape sounded more full and warm. After a while though, it became apparent that the V3 sounded cleaner/detailed in comparison and what I had interpreted as fullness in the SBM was just a slight smear.

I don't understand...but then again your ears are different than mine...
I think the differences in these recordings are so slight...most people could hardly tell a difference I bet...I couldn't pick one as better than the other...both good...different flavors...

the stock sbm-1, while it has made some fine tapes, has a very distinct sonic signatue that many people do not care for. As Dave said once, they have a way of making every set of mics run into them sound the same.

..and I don't think the sbm-1 loses the ability to make mics sound the same, even after the line stage mod...but to me, the mod adds a warmth that makes it much easier to take.
the mme shares this quality imo, when run alone.

I think I agree with you Marc...

ahh, my too favorite set ups, I ran the v2/momsbm-1 for awhile, always made real nice tapes, running the V3 now...they are different, but there are things I like about both setups
