Title: Bizarre Rig Combos?
Post by: Nick Graham on September 02, 2004, 02:35:13 PM
While we all know there are certain rigs that were seemingly just made to be ran together (i.e. 480>M148, MBHO>MP2, KM184>V2>SBM1, etc.), anybody ever run across a rarely used combination of gear and been pleasantly surprised at the results?

It seems like a lot of the mic/pre combos are as financially motivated as anything. In other words, dollar range of mics = dollar range of pre. You see a lot of Oktava>UA5, AKG c1000>AD20, Neumann>V3 tapes, all comparably priced mics and pre-amps.

Just think, mk4>ps2>ad20 could make the greatest tapes of all time, but I doubt anybody's ever ran those together. A buddy of mine in NY runs c1000s>V3, and they are without a doubt the best c1000 tapes I've ever heard.

$1400 pre, $300 mics....huh?   I bet they do sound good though, for C1000 tapes!

Once ran a pair of Shure SM-11's (cheap ass lavaliers) into V2> ADC-20. . . What the hell, it was easy to get a backpack with that shit and a DA-P1 in (fest in a public park, pre-9/11), might as well squeeze whatever you can out of the mics!

I used to run some stealth omnis > Griffin iMic > laptop back in the early days... boy, those tapes sucked! I really could have used a pad on them, looking back. I doubt the spl on them was any higher than 115.

i ran c1000s > V2 at bonnaroo in 2002 and i was amazed at how good it sounded.

Steve Sanford, a friend of Luvean's and mine, runs MG200s > PS-2 > AD-20 and when run right those tapes don't sound bad at all.

I've run Nak CM1000's(card caps)>V3 for the last 2 years and I'm always amazed at the sound. $325 for the pair, plus the 48V mod and I like them better than my Schoeps. Why did I buy Schoeps? Well, since I had $1500 in a pre/ad and vintage Japanese mics, I thought spending 2K plus on mics would make my rig sound a whole lot better. Maybe not.

Joe - You got LUCKY bro finding those CM-1000's for only $325!! Normally you WOULD have paid a much higher price for those rare Nak 1000's!! I still can't believe you found those mics so friggin cheap!! :o

I used to run a strange Nak combo as well: mod Nak701's > MX-100 > Wmod UA-5 (via mic in)

I fed the MX-100 line-out into the mic in of the UA-5 utilizing Doug Oades mic pre upgrade with suprising results!! By running the MX-100 in front of the UA-5 allowed me to fine tune my levels without having to battle those touchy UA-5 gain pots all while still taking advantage of the preamp upgrade. Not to mention the MX-100 had unbalanced mic in which the mod 700's had been converted to some 20yrs ago and made connections easy to deal with. Sounded great and was much easier to set my levels with than just the UA-5 solo. I also found by running this combo it acutally lowerd my noise level down in quiet acoustical shows by allowing me to run the UA-5 at lower gain.
