I have recorded a hand full of shows this year using AKG 393 > UA5 > CO2 > optical >JB3. All recordings went fine except for the last one. I had dropped samples all over the place. Is the Hosa ODL-276 the best replacement for the CO2? (I'm guessing that the CO2 is the problem).

YES hands down, it is the best option

why don't/can't you use the ua5's optical out directly into the jb3? The fewer the steps the better
-
that is a damn good question, i didnt even really look at that part closely ;D

if it isn't moded you can't use optical out without usb

or the coax if i'm not mistaken

I was mistaken, I am using AKG 393 > UA5 > DA-P1 > CO2 > optical > JB3. That is why I can't go straight from the UA5 and It's my friend's rig so I can't modify anything. Hosa still the best?

Ummm... Just a note, if your friend is using the Coax output from the UA5 for his DAP1, you will still have the Optical output available for your JB3... So you still don't need the Hosa???
But if you ever do need a format convertor, pick the Hosa ODL276. I have one and its fantastic - never a problem... Runs about 6hours on a single 9v battery.
