i have been searching the site trying to figure out how to measure angles and distance for the different configuerations?
could someone point me to the archive that i know must exist.
also, does it matter if windscreens touch?

doesn't matter if wondscreens touch
go to dpamicrophones.com and the microphone university link on the left side...
-
the dpa site is the best, but for LD mics, I was much more clear with configs after seeing this site:
http://homepage.mac.com/gottajiboo40/PhotoAlbum11.html
BTW - DIN rules.

thanks, the mic U is helpful indeed, but i still dont understand how to measure the degree between the two capsules.
the distance of cm is measured from the centers of the capsules, but how about the degrees, i imagine i could eyeball it, but there must be a more specific way to go about it.
protracter?
also, these configuerations i believe are mostly all acheivable using a standard movable t-bar, right?
-
protracter
eventually you'll be able to eyeball it
I like the akg t-bar, available at your favorite retailer.
-
just a little plastic protracter will do?
-
yea, show up in the TS with a protractor. I've seen it before, but i can guess 90, and 115 close enough, do we really have to that precise?? i don't really care so much, i like my tapes, thats all that matters, try a few things, and enjoy what you get.

sure will...
but you'll get the hang of it soon enough and be able to leave it at home...
-
yeah, protractors are soo geeky :P ;D
just geuss after a few shows and if your ear likes it, thats all that matters ;D

I used a protractor and made a cutout from a peice of cardboard that had the exact measurements and angles for my TL's... the cutout looks like a trapezoid. I made one for DIN and one for ORTF.
Look at the link I posted above, and look, for instance, at the DIN picture from above. Imagine a peice of cardboard trapezoid that has on the bottom, long edge 17cm apart; from that line use a protractor to measure the angles inward, draw your lines up (these lines would match up to the metal strips on the top of the mics pictured) - then connect the tops of the lines to finish out the trapezoids.
I use these peices of cardboard every time, but I also try to eyeball first- but I am always way off. :-\
Did I mention that DIN rules?

Got this one from Todd French, who told me he got it from Nick Gregory:
DIN, 90 degrees, 17cm. 17cm is 6.69 inches. And everyone knows 90deg. But he uses a dollar bill to figure it out: US bills are 6 inches long. So add a 1/2 inch and viola!
btw, 1 inch = 2.54 cm

17cm for hyper-cardioid and 20cm for cardioid for reading here at TS.com

If you were going to search for "best mic configs for the situation", how would you go about it? I guess, what would be good keywords. I'm trying to identify what configs to use. When, and why mostly. Is this all up to my ears?
Is there a situation where ORTF is best? Where DIN is best? XY, etc?
