hey,
i know there are no stupid questions, but i'm trying to just figure something out. people talk about doing a digi-mod. what i don't get is the back of the UA-5 has a coaxial out, right? why can't it just plug my 7-pin into the back of the box and then into my M1?
mike
edit: or even the rca out to m1...

has an optical out as well. the digimod allows you to run the unit as a standalone rather than connected to a computer. if it isn't mod'd and it isn't connected to a computer it will not pass signal out
-
you can
the digi-mod allows you to do this while not running a laptop as well
un-modded UA5s don't throw a coax or optical w/out a laptop being used too
(I think... :P)

ok...thanks for the info...kind of silly if you ask me. having to have a computer hooked up to it. oh well. just looking into a rig and need phantom/pre, and just playing with any and all options.

well it wasnt designed as a stand alone, we just made it that way :-)

If you are running a stock UA-5 not only do you need a computer interface for digital output but I believe you need to set playback to the UA-5 using the options in your recording software. (correct me if I'm wrong, but that is how it worked with my former-stock ua-5)
-
i think you're right about the playback - i think you first have to record the file as a wav, and then you can playback the file and have it pass thru the digital out. but the ua-5 won't send do digital out unless its thru playback. (does that make any sense?)
basically, you can't record from the digital out without the digimod, you have to first record to your computer and then playback the file before it'll pass a digiital signal out.
i think - its been a long time tho since i've experimented.

That was indeed the case on mine before I self-digimodded it.

nice rig Chris, nice name too...
and you're a self-digi-modder? plus T!

Actually to be more accurate, Oade Brothers Audio were the first to introduce the digi mod UA-5 as a stand alone pre/ADC.......then others from this board just reversed engineered the mods from ones performed by Oade so it can be done with out paying for their services. ;)
