New to taping and considering my options before making purchase decisions...I like the reviews I've seen for the Marantz PMD 670, but it's a bit big for stealth recordings. Not interested in the NJB3, primarily because I haven't seen any consensus on whether it's good or bad (those who love it, love it...but those that don't, don't) or whether it'll just end up being a paperweight in a year (and not being very tech literate, the reviews of their customer service skills leave much to be desired).
So I've been thinking about going the DAT route...but here's my primary concern right now: what kind of equipment do you need to make the DAT to computer transfer?
Thanks,
Jeff

your active/passive cable, bit perfect soundcard, computer, software. das it.
-
why not the jb3 route ???
ive recorded/transferred many things on it and like any piece of equipment, if you take care of it, it will last :)
and the money youd spend on an active cable alone will buy you a refurbed jb3, not to mention soundcard, recording software, and time on transfers, not to mention tapes, etc :)

for $200 I'm not concerned if it's just a paper weight in a year....
also in the future I can use it like an ipod for when I'm hiking or biking...
-
granted it's not the best, and adds a prosses, but going line out(analog)stereo mini > 2 rca > soundcard(prety much need a good one) > computer(should have) > cdwave(free)
only about $100 that way

but it really does defeat the point of recording in digital and spending $$ on it all :)

yeh, didn't say it was great, just workable. but still better than recording analog.
that said, i'd take a jb3 over a minidisc anyday. and think a lappy's the way to go. but since "i'm" on a low budget, i try to make the best of what i have. and don't want to discourage someone from pulling a tape.
if you spend $5000 to start off w/ it's an expensive way to learn that you're not duing something right. better to start small and work your way up, i think.

words of wisdom, hell yeah bro ;)
i feel ya, its def been trial and error for me, thats for sure :)
and a lappy to me is only great if ya have the playback to back it up :) if ya dont have a great system to do playback on, whats the point of 24/96, other than archival sake ???

I wish that were the case...but after thinking about it, I'm buying a refurbished one through Creative Labs and Ebay. Any chance the instructions have a roadmap for the other stuff you need to have to tape shows?

there are no instructions from creative about what outboard gear you need. you need mics, pre/ad, optical device(odl-276 or 312), and optical cable
