Title: Question about getting a rig...
Post by: justlikethenight on September 25, 2004, 06:49:49 PM
I'm new and have a $1500-2500 budget for a
stealth rig...  any suggestions?

I'm thinking stealth because it is so versatile. Welcome any input.

Thanks!

that's a pretty nice budget for a stealth rig. you should do really well.

my recs:

mics:

Audio Technica AT853Rx (changeable capsules: omni, cardioid, hypercardioid); $200-300 range per pair new.
DPA 4061 (omni); $600 per pair used i think.
Neumann KM140 w/active cable system; $1400 per pair used

recorder:

Sony D100; $300-400 used. although you can find Refurbished ones on Ebay for great prices.
Sony PCM-M1: $350-500 used.
Nomad JB3: ??

Preamp:

Sound Devices MP-2: $400 used
Beyerdynamic MV-100: $250 used
Sonosax SM-X2: $600 used

all give or take few $$ for adjustments.

good luck,
marc

also add in some cables, lets see, not many tho, maybe an extra 100-150 just to be safe :)

and batteries, that can range from AA's to sla's, so add another hundred bucks maybe there, depending at most id say tho, maybe less, if ya go recharbles instead of alkalines too if you plan on using those if possible :)

Thanks guys!

So----I'm doing stealth mainly because of the versatility. On the other hand...I like to dance...so shows where I actually do go stealth are going to be a little tough for me. PLUS..I'm short. 5'2. What are your thoughts?   Do you think stealth is the way to go?  I don't know how much it's going affect the sound being so short.

I like my AT853Rx;  Bought them brand new for $314; But King Crimson is selling a set in the yard sale right now.
I would love to get the 4061's though...

Nomad JukeBox 3 - mine new was $300 - but you can find refurbs for a bit cheaper on ebay.  That was for the 40gb model, which I have discovered is may more than I need if I just clean up the HD every once in a while on it.  I love the NJB3.

I can't speak to stealthable pre's really, except for the AD-20, which I have made some decent tapes with... but I would imagine there are better, smaller pre's you can use.

Put your mics on a hat or somewhere on the highest point of your body.  Use Omni caps (the 4061's are omnis) and the AT853Rx's have a set of Omni caps you can purchase.  And, unfortunately, you need to be still- that's the most difficult part for me, cause I like to people-watch;  You'll hear muffling and stuff in your tape if you turn away from the source.

Creekfreak ~  I'd like to hear what you have to say about "super stealth." :)

well, I feel there are varying degrees of stealth rigs. If you want to concell the mics on your body, or on glasses etc and be able to crotch the entire rig then that is super stealth....if you just want low profile, say some schoeps actives, running on a ORTF bar on a low profile stand I call that just plain low profile

I'm definitely interested in becoming a "super-stealth dudette" and am currently looking to upgrade my recorder.
From everything I've learned here, I'm now looking for a Sony D100.
What do you think?
:)

Schoeps MK4 > Nbox > D7/D8/D100/M1
Neumann SKM140 > MP2 > D7/D8/D100/M1
MBHO ka200n/603a > MP2 > D7/D8/D100/M1

All should be around $2k... Add $350 for a SBM-1 and your all set.

I like:

AKG CK 61s>actives>JK Labs DVC>Mod SBM-1>D8

You might go over budget.  You could cut out the SBM-1 if need be and get a PCM-1 of D100 instead of the D8.  I have never run without the SBM-1 so I can't speak to how it would sound.

Pearl Jam is gonna be kick ass tomorrow night!

I don't know what you mean.  I'm gonna stealth with the JK Labs rig.  Say what you want about Pearl Jam, they might not be that taper freindly, but they defenetly go out of there way to help there fans both music wise and ticket wise.

in reference to the other pj thread in open forum.  pj's site mentions cassette recorders specifically and no DATs allowed.
