I plug my mic in and follow the instructions for recording and it shows the time on the screen but when i listen to it from the player or upload to my computer there is nothing at all. i put the recording volume all the way to 30. do i need a pre amp to power the mic or what?

You plugging into a line in?  Yes.   Plugging into a mic in- need to have, at minimum, a battery in the microphone.
