Hi All
Just a quick question:
I'm going to buy either the SP-CMC-2 or SP-CMC-8 (no phantom) to work with my Nomad ... so what do I need ?? A Battery Box or a Pre Amp ??
At the moment I'm using the core cardiods ... and is having a hard time getting a decent signal ... I usually stand in front of the racks ...
Any other recomandations ??

i'm pretty sure if you don't get mics that accept the phantom power, you should go with the battery box. if the mics do accept phantom power, go with the pre amp.

Get a Denecke AD20 preamp. They're usually in the Yard Sale for $200.

............. and the battery box
-
Why both ?? According to SP the pre-amp gives the power to the mics .... I would be nervous about distortion ... but SP says that is not an issue .... if i keep the db low enough ....
Is there a difference between the Core Cardiod and the SP-CMC-2 or SP-CMC-8 and how much gain they need to get some decent levels ??

not all pre's give phantom power to mics.

to my ears, cmc4 sounds best out of all the cmc lines (2, 8, 10).

You'll get levels with or without the preamp. That's, of course, if you are using the levels on the JB3. You'll get the best sound w/ preamp overall. If you are trying to keep it simple, get the latest Denecke AD-20 w/ the 3.5mm input. The battery modle will power the mics, the Denecke AD-20 will amplify the recording and convert analog to digital. Use a Toslink to connect the AD20 to the JB3.
If you are going to get mics that require phantom power, you will need a phantom power module, like the Denecke PS-2, for the mics. Which means, pitch your current battery odule. For Phantom, check my setup below.
