Anyone know what methods were used to record Miles Davis's live recodings... Bitchs Brew or Pangaea. What were the mic's, pre's, matrix, etc. Is there a site that list recording details on various live recordings? These recording sound so sweet
-
of course they sound sweet all mile's shit is perfected. :) Visionary, prophet, and ceasless explorer. You've got to love 30 year old recordings that are still considered avant garde today. I remember that first time I heard miles, it was agartha years ago and really changed the way that I view music. My favorite musician of all time hands down. bitches brew is studio and Pangaea is live just for the record ;) +T for appreciating the Dark Princes vision.

Dunno...you might try searching for the producer and see if there is some info about him online. Kind of like Eddie Kramer talking about the things he did with Hendrix.
BTW, I think I need to pull out "Bitches Brew" and give it a spin: it's been a long time since I listened to that album.

i really like the recording of "live at the plugged nickel" but my favorite miles CD currently is the tribute to jack johnson. also - has anyone heard the joshua redman live CD from 1995 ( maybe ) but in the booklet it says recorded by 2 audience microphones. ( something along those lines) that is by far my favorite sounding live CD in the Jazz genre.

Miles was defiitely a badass and the production on those albums was great.
Live Evil is another fantastic collection of great recordings.

Green's daughter-in-law actually wrote a biography on Grant, not that great a book, but some interesting stories about the guy . . . only for those really interested in GG

which I am
thanks for the recommendation :)

Another vote for the Plugged Nickle sessions.
and I'd be remiss in not mentioning the Box Set "Bill Evans - Secret Sessions".
when Bill Evans played the Village Vanguard some guy would always
bring his tape deck and record from the audience. Mid to late 60s I think,
and I'm not sure of his equipment. But the Evans estate (or someone)
got hold of the masters and released them as a boxed set on Verve.
not as stunning as some period auds I have heard in terms of sound
quality, but you gotta give the guy credit, he recorded a bunch of
shows at the Vanguard over a span of like 8 years, and it was ultimately
released by a major label. although the sound quality may be lacking,
some of the music is phenomenal.
there have been a bunch of 60s auds (& boards) circulating over on
easytree, org for Coltrane, Miles, Pharoah, Ornette, etc. lately of varying
degrees of quality as well.
too bad they didn't have access to the kind of equipment then
that we do today.

sorry, off topic, but what are some dope-ass Grant Green albums? I have a greatest hits vol 2 which has some sweet tunes though the mastering sounds strange on some tracks.
on topic, I think Teo Macero (spelling???) did a lot of mastering on Miles' electric stuff, there must have been some interviews with him at some time, but I have no idea where you would dig up the source info, maybe ask around on some pro audio forums.
Take care,
Ben

Unfortunately, Green's recorded works are VERY hit or miss, with most misses . . . however my favorite is a live record of his "Live at the Lighthouse." Really great funky jazz, the dude rips . . . I'm always hesitant to buy anything of his because of the unpredictibility so any other recs, Tim??
BTW the aforementioned biography does have an annotated list of his work, I'll try and dig it up and post some more . . .

yeah, Telefunken's and reel to reels suck ;)

Most of my jazz is still packed away... I'll see what I have. Off hand "Blues Breakers" is very good.

Have been trying to find recoding infomation.....still no luck. I know someone must know where to find this info on the web. Got to love the duo recording of Duke Elington and Ray Brown sweet!
-
I don't know where to find recording information but allmusic.com can't be beat for discography info. Their recommendations and ratings are right on.
My favorite Grant Green album: Idle Moments
For some other burning jazz guitar: Tal Farlow - This is Tal Farlow
