Title: SACD / DVD-A Recs?
Post by: Lee on October 07, 2004, 03:04:53 PM
Finally jumping into "real" hifi with my new universal disc player.  Any titles on SACD or DVD-A that I need to have?  Obviously Dark Side of the Moon (I hear it's phenomenal in hi-res), but are there any others that are particularly well-suited to these new formats?

Mingus Ah Um is badass on CD; I can't imagine how good it must sound on SACD!

I haven't purchased any popular music in this format. My new universal disk player has only seen some classical discs in these formats. If you're interested in that, check out

http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/main.jsp

They have the SACD and DVD-A formatted discs separated out from the main selections. Their prices are pretty good as well.

Could you explain this? I haven't heard it yet, but just ordered it. Curious why you think it is lame.

Thanks!

Modern DVD-A Advanced Resolution has a multi-channel track of 24bit 96  kHz and/or stereo 24bit 192  kHz/96  kHz. Moreover, they are usually created from 24bit 96  kHz / 192 kHz master records, all the processing being performed on state-of-the-art equipment with high definition (supporting 64bit 384  kHz), which considerably influenced the resulting quality.

I think that Trey sounds great in 24/96.
This is one hell of a studio album.
My guess is spott likes a live sound. This is different.

Overview

DIRE STRAITS/BROTHERS IN ARMS (HYBRID SACD5.1)

Propelled by Mark Knopfler's literate songs, gruff vocals, and spidery guitar work, Dire Straits had overcome initial skepticism for their resistance to '70s new wave accents in favor of their rootsy traditionalism. This 1985 album captures the band consolidating a far more epic style than the concise shuffles and ballads that the original scrappy quartet had reeled off, their ambitions fueled by the larger canvas afforded by the compact disc. One of the first albums to exploit the format's longer playing time, Brothers in Arms was initially released in separate versions for CD/cassette and edited LP, and the band became digital poster boys on a world tour sponsored by CD hardware interests. Critics that had once warmed to the band sniffed at the marketing, but the album remains their best known, noteworthy for the MTV staple "Money for Nothing" and the breezy rock shuffle "Walk of Life," as well as for the wistful "So Far Away," the plot-driven narratives of "Ride Across the River," and the title song of course. The album is an amazing mix of styles and moods, but produced without a fault all the way through. This was the showpiece album for this group of hard working musicians, and proved Mark Knopfler one of the worlds greatest guitarists. And now for the 20th anniversary of the album we get a limited edition SACD version that sounds incredible and reeks of sonic integrity.

1. So Far Away
2. Money For Nothing
3. Walk of Life
4. Your Latest Trick
5. Why Worry
6. Ride Across The River
7. The Man's Too Strong
8. One World
9. Brothers In Arms

Is it just me or is $35 a lot for one little shiny disc?   Are SACD's usually this expensive?   ???

Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble
Silk Road Journeys sacd

Stunning.
I have nothing to base a comparison by, as this is my first exposure to high res. of any kind.
The dynamics of this recording are amazing!!! from the most intimate of noises to the full room shaking giganticness that could be imagined. Players floating in space, in my living room. Very realisitic.
This is a very eastern/asian flavored, so it might not appeal to everybody, but it amazing music, and an unreal audio experience.
I'm really looking forward to high resolution recording!!!

I agree completely, this SACD is breathtaking.

this thing sounds just like a small scale baroque organ, or like a caliope (sp?)
The Zampona or Situ above sounds airy with a fundamental and then a bunch of very high harmonics.
It's that classic new age, "mountains of the condor" sound.  Very spacious and peaceful.

Most of the Asian instruments that I hear are "buzzy" in tone.

Just picked these up tonight. Both are fantastic:

Neil Young - On the Beach (DVD-A)
Brian Wilson - SMiLE (5.1 DVD-V)

And speaking of Brian, I don't think I saw the Beach Boys Pet Sounds DVD-A on here. Another goodie.

I just picked up Steely Dan's Gaucho DVD-A; it sounds fantastic - phenominal depth and imaging - even if you do not like Steely Dan it is a treat to hear....

Tommy (Who) and GD Workingman's and American Beauty sound great as well
