Title: What mic would work best with an MD player?
Post by: SkaGuitarOAR on October 15, 2004, 08:59:11 AM
I need to know what mic(s) would be best to use with my MD player.  Its a Sony MZ-EH1 MD player.

i honestly don't think that md is a recorder, it looks to me like its just a player.  does it even have a mic or line in?

People have been telling me that I can record with it.  And they have mics for sale on sony.com for MD players, so I dunno.

Not that I can see.  But other people have told me that with a mic hooked up the right way it can record.

some mds are only players.  if theres no record feature it'll be hard to record even if you have a mic.

Well I'll double check when I get home.  I guess I'm gonna have to buy a JB3.

Ya I really appreciate you all reading my questions.  I just am lazy and don't feel like searching haha.  Sorry, I will search more though.  I just really am hoping not to find that an MD player doesn't work.  Cause I don't have cash right now to go buy a bunch of equipment.

we all don't have enough cash to buy the equipment we REALLY want.  it's the cosmic shame of being a taper ;)

Ya but I don't have it to buy even like basic stuff haha.  Which really sucks for me.  So I will hopefully find someone nice to sell me some old equipment on here.

Check minidisc.org for MD deck info. I found yourrs there (http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-EH1.html) and it will definitely not take a mic directly. Whoever told you you could was wrong. It only has usb and headphone jacks. The only way to "record" with it would be to transfer audio from a computer to the MD deck via USB, in which case you might as well just use the computer to record the audio.

So you're out of luck trying to use that as a field recorder. Your idea of getting a JB3 sounds like a much better way to go.

When you get a JB3, you will need to connect a powered mic (usually mics + a battery box) to it as it doesn't have a real mic input that supplies power to the mics. If you just get the JB3 you could use it to be a patcher until you get some mics of your own.

No audio input jacks! Records only via USB download from PC.

It has a headphone input, and I bet I could tweak it somehow, or not...

Headphone jacks are for output only.  No amount of "tweaking" will make it record from the headphone jack.  :)

Sorry.

this could be solved easily buy buying a usb pre (http://www.sonicsense.com/preusb.htm) from me.  but then, you'ld need to get real mics, sla's, cables, stand, etc...

sell that minidisc on ebay and use the money to get you a JB3 and a MIDIMAN CO2...thats what I would do if I were you.....
that way you can get some decent waves and you will get source information from various mics. Then you can buy your mics based on your waves/tapes/research....

just my thoughts....JB3s are not that expensive and they will open up a world of possibilities for you.... ;)

How much do you think I should sell it for?

How much do you think I should sell it for?
I looked up the completed auctions for that model MD and I found that somewhere from $50 to $60 should be about right....You def. cant sell it to another taper or anybody who wants to get into taping because of the input limitations.  I would set it up as a buy it now and take some great pics...Hopefully it is cosmetically sound. Hope this helps..

Here is a Link to the completed auctions for a Sony MZ-NE410 (http://search-completed.ebay.com/Sony-MZ-NE410_W0QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfromZR10QQsatitleZSonyQ20MQ5AQ2dNE410QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZsoQQsoitemstatusZ2QQsotrZ2)

You will have to sign in to ebay to view the link....good luck :)

That wouldn't work. The usb on md player/recorders is for communicating with a host device, like a PC. Sony's got these things so locked down, you have to use their crappy software that won't let you copy any audio back from md. The only thing thiws one would be good for is listening to music

Just get a JB3

Ya I am deffinately going to go for the JB3, but just gotta talk my parents into letting me sell my MD on ebay.  Or either sell it to some little kid on my street for an outrageous amount.

Jk on the second thing, but I hope I will be able to sell it on ebay.

+t for getting into taping so early.  If you get the JB3 and all the cables that you can muster, you will be able to learn alot about taping.  Try Patching first.  The JB3 will keep you from having to purchase any additional media other than CDRs to archive your files.  You can also use your computer hard drive if its large enough.  I mean by patching you will get the experience needed to make a decision on mics.  I mean you have your hold taping career in front of you.  Just go out there, be humble, ask questions( but dont yell in the taperssection, wait for set breaks or after show to do all of your talking) Learn Learn Learn.....dont try to overprice the MD.  Sell it for 50 to 60 bucks and be done with it.......Good luck.
