Have you tried the Windows Media Player already on your machine? Free as can be and you already have it.

Sounds like you just need the proper codec. That'll be the case with any video player you use. After trying to open the video in WMP, go to File | Properties and see if it lists the Audio / Video codec for the file. If that doesn't work, try GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) to identify the codec. Once identified, download the codec (try MovieCodec (http://www.moviecodec.com/)) and then try to play the file again.
