When I run anything in to the UA5 things must go wrong. When I listen to the UA5 headphone output the track sounds fine, but when I listen through my JB3 it is usually mostly static and it records this way too. Also the speed of the recording that was done plays extremely slow when I listen to the playback on my JB3. I figure I just don't know anything about the UA5 settings. I read the UA5 manual but can't comprehend most of it. Help!

is the sample rate set really low?
-
First things first:
What gear exactly, how do you have it all configured (switches, knobs, settings, etc.), and how is it all connected?
-
I had this problem once with the sample rate set at 96 but the advance switch turned off. Dunno if it's the same problem, but it sounds VERY similar. Check the sample rate and be sure it's set to either 44.1 or 48.

also check that the rear switch is on optical and not coax

Wouldn't that mean he'd get no signal tho?

Nope. Pretty sure the rear coax/optical switch is for input only. I believe coax and optical outputs are both active at all times on a digi-mod UA-5.
Def sounds like a sample rate issue. But the static...dunno.
For the static issue:
- Are you able to duplicate the problem in a test environment at home?
- Have you swapped out a known-good optical cable?
- Recorded through the UA-5 to an optical device other than the JB3?
- Do you encounter the same problem running coax out?
- Does the JB3 accept an optical signal properly from other devices?
- Is it an Oade digi-mod or self-mod UA-5?
For the speed issue:
- Are you able to duplicate the problem in a test environment at home?
- Are you sure you set the sample rate on the UA-5 properly?
- What record option did you select on the JB3 (WAV 44.1/48, MP3, etc.)?
- Did you start recording on the JB3 before firing up the UA-5? (The JB3 won't always set the proper sample rate if you start recording before the optical output device starts feeding it a signal)
- After transferring the file to your PC, try changing the WAV header's sample rate (not resampling) to see if the speed sounds proper with different sample rates.

I believe I did start recording on the JB3 before I turned on the UA5....in hindsight, why the hell would I do that?
I will try that thanks!

Ah. Good point.

yes, both are active at all times. you can run the optical to a jb3 and the coax to a dat at the same time.
