looking to set the radio station up with it's own rig to do live music broadcasts from local venues...they've got a couple input options already and when my rig is available i will use it, but we need something to do the trick when i'm not around.
only about $400 to spend, they were thinking of the rode nt-4.
i want to try the lsd2 but it's a little too pricey.
-
AT822 also.

Try and talk them into the lsd2. It really is a great mic, and I have yet to hear any tape that I liked with the NT-4.
-
there is also that shure VP something or other (VP88???) that looks decent, though I am not sure how much it costs.
-
The rode NT4 is considerably cheaper on Ebay...
I also happen to have one I would sell... cheap...
But, I'll be the first to say that I am not a big fan of it. Doesn't have clarity in the highs. It does work decently for nearfield recording, which is prolly what you're doing, right?
Seems to me that it would be a better idea to just get some C-1000s or something instead. At least you can change configs that way.

have you checked with Jonny(schuster)?
his LSD2 is for sale, not sure what he wants for it though
-
he's looking for 650 which is too high.
we don't really want to go with a mic pair as we want setup to be as simple as possible.
any nt-4 recordings i can be pointed to?
-
I'll dig somethign up when I get home from work later tonight
-
pfife, have you ever used the nt-4 onstage?
-
Not really... I've used it right in front of a stage, but not onstage... I don't think it would be good for that, cause the caps are cards- wouldn't you want omni's for that?
I've used it as an overhead mic on a drum kit before... seemed to work well...
-
no, cards are fine for onstage...probably my preferred cap for that setting.
-
right on- I know I don't have any onstage, just close nearfield.
-
I can hook you up with some NT-4 samples as well. I'd say it's nice up close but not great for the pa situation. I don't understand why but it seems to be. I have an instore recording that's just beautiful but my club stuff is lacking.
-
I'd have to agree with the consensus on the NT-4. I've made a couple of recordings that are very nice, but would certainly be better with different mics. One of my recordings is on the archive:

well if it sounds okay up close i don't have a problem recomending it...i know it's not gonna sound as nice as my mbho's but we also don't have that kind of money to spend :)
-
would the mics stay onstage for every show?
I would only run onstage for a purely instrumental band that has amps for everything - you would be surprised how many key players DI straight from keyboard to snake :(
-
yeah it's gonna stay onstage, unless there's opportunity to run further back and/or we need to get vocals...but we may set up a mixing board to get a matrix also. the idea is to record smaller acts in smaller settings and broadcast it live...it needs to be not too cumbersome and easy to set up and run.
i found out we already bought it, so it's a done deal.
