Title: SBD patch
Post by: charles on October 28, 2004, 08:50:59 PM
I'm patching into SBD at a show next week. I'm renting equipment for the show. What is the best setup for a SBD recording. I'm thinking SBD>Lunatec V3>PCM-M1.......will that work well? Any other suggestions. Remember I'm renting, so I've got alot of options.

Well, yeah...that wouldn't suck...

Just make sure you have all the cables you need (or might need) to get the job done. And bring a mag light.

Why don't you rent a JB3, seeing as how you're looking for a cheap starter deck/rig?

Where the heck do you rent that kind of stuff, anyway?  ???

someone pointed me to this site

they seem to have it all. Definetly not cheap, but I really want this show.

Hm. Well, good luck. Wouldn't you kinda want to "rent" things that you might want to buy? I know from you other posts that cash is tight, so a V3 might not be an accurate representation of your future taping indeavours. Either way, the setup you're talking about would work. CABLES will be the thing you'll want to make sure you have. This place rent cables (I didn't check the link cause I'm drinking)?

good question...I'll check. I agree with you about getting something less expensive in light of my purchase plans. But, I can't decide if I want experience here or a just a great sound. How big is the difference in sound b/w say a ua-5 and a V3?

Depends on your ears and your playback system. For the common man, I'd say a UA fine (or any AD converter, for that matter) would be just fine.

Bottom line, You really just want a good sounding recording of the show, right? So, go with what you can reasonably afford, and be happy.

Re: experience over great sound, I don't know how much you've taped in the past, but...if it's less than three times, and you've never asked for/ran a board feed, I'd chalk next week up to "experience" for you. Have a good night.

So is running a board feed/asking for one.....much more difficult than I''m thinking it is?

not really, if they are cool with it, then they will probably be more than happy to hook you up.

Any good tips on how to go about....etiquette.....what to say........can anyone give me a quick overview of what I need to do...ie...where the xlr is on the board....I know they'll point this stuff out to me but I want a heads up.

i would make sure they are done with whatever they are doing, try not to interrupt them doing anything. same way with asking for a patch from someone's rig

most of the time either they will have some xlr's they will plug in and hand you, or you hand them your cables and they will plug them in for you

you porbably wont have to do anything but plug in thier cables or hand off your cables

xlr outs could be anywhere on any board, no telling.

im sure if they are cool with a board patch, they will more than accomadate you

Depends on who you ask!

Honestly, if you are getting a board patch, I wouldn't waste the money on a v3 or a ua-5.  I think line-in to an m1 would sound fine.  That'd also cut down on the number of things you have to worry about.

Another thing...
The signal that you get out of the board may be quite hot (+4db), so start with conservative levels at first.
Good luck

Many boards, these days, have a set of RCA outs as well...take note...

Cant wait till the boards with the digi-outs get popular...!!!

Is it a big room? If the room is small, I'd bet that your sbd recording isn't going to sound good, because small rooms are sensitive to stage volume... IOW, if someone's guitar is cranked on stage, then the board only has to turn it up a little compared to the rest of the instruments.  Result?  You get a tape with basically no guitar.

Also, sbd recordings in small rooms, in my experience, tend to be extremely vocal heavy, as vocs have basically no stage volume relative to other instruments.

Remember, soundguys are mixing for the room, not for a tape.  If its a large room, please disregard this message.

Let us know how it goes!
