Title: how the heck do i transfer this......
Post by: junkbondking on November 17, 2004, 08:21:17 AM
so last nite i taped pete wernick's live 5.  i also had to run the house recording system (some kind of cd player/recorder dealie) and missed the first song on my rig (the house cdr recorder got it.) i have the rest of set 1 and all of set 2 on my jb3, but somehow need to get the first song from the board feed to merge with what i have.

for my jb3 transfers i use cd wave editor, and im thinking i can just track out the first song from the board feed, save that file, and then kinda stick the rest of set one from my rig onto it.  but im worried about a gap or whatnot on the wave file in cd wave editor.

any suggestions are appreciated.

As long as you are using CD Wave...your cuts should be sector-boundry safe...just trim the first track to your liking...

why not merge it into your recording using a proggy like soundforge, cool edit, wavelab, etc - i'm positive they have those features - prolly most likely cool edit with its multi tracking feature...import both files, sync them up, export to one file.

thanks for the tip ed but i should also disclose that 1) i suck at computers, and find that cd wvae editor works just fine for what i need and 2) i don't own any other transferring software as well.  i'll try to just use cd wave editor first and go from there.

i'm sure if you ask nice enuf someone will hook you up with cool edit.  if not i think dklien was talking about kristal http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/ last week or a little bit ago, which is a free multitracking program - might wanna check that out if you're not happy with the results from wave editor

as long as they stop between songs - you should be able to get it close enough with CD Wave....

Not sure why he would want to combine them if he's only going to chop it into tracks again...

i'm not familar with the band/artist...so i didn't know if there'd be stops or not.  yeah, if theres a pause in the music, talking, etc then cd wave should get the job done, but if you're trying to sync up two sources and not have it be so noticeable, merging the two tracks would be the best bet.

you could always do a matrix in post of the sbd feed and the aud too *shrug*

Yeah, Wernick likes to talk, that's for sure.

JBK, I'm unclear:  Are these two recordings (house recording and yours) from different sources?  Or same source, one cloned from the other?

If different sources, I think you'll want to merge them together with a crossfade in an audio editing program.  Otherwise it'll sound...well, bad, IMO.

If the same source, one cloned from the other, CD-Wave may allow you to simply cut up the tracks accordingly, but it'd still be easier in an audio editing program that allows you to zoom in.  Zooming in, you'll be able to cut at precisely the proper sample for a seamless connection from one track to the other.

it is 2 sources.  source 1 is the sdb -> cdr recorder.  source 2 is my mg 300 -> mp-2 ->sbm-1 ->jb3

Oooooo...I'd definitely get it into a proper audio editing program so you can overlap the tracks and cross-fade to smooth the transition.  But that's me, I'm nitpicky like that.

Or...just scrap the AUD and keep / circulate the SBD (if allowed).

Like its been said above (I think), you'll get a smoother transition if you combine the two versions in an editing program.

Audacity is free, easy to use, although it is a little memory hungry (on my 9GB laptop, this does make a difference), and its lacking one or two of the nicer features from the editing programs that you pay for.

Basically:
-Open up 1st track
-Open up second track below it
-Delete all the crap you dont want/need from each track
-'Time shift' the second track so that it starts roughly at the right point
-Fade out t1
-Fade in t2
-Fine tune the 'Time shift' again so that the tracks sound seamless
-Quick mix to make one track (highlight both tracks before you do this)
-Save as .wav
-Track in CDWave as normal

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If you try this, and get stuck, post here, I'm usually about as I'm a sad internet muppet, although bear in mind the time difference..

chris - if you want to flac the two sources (EAC the SBD source and flac it) and send them here, I will do the crossfade and blending stuff for you.
