Title: Clipping
Post by: Josephine on November 18, 2004, 11:22:25 PM
Can anyone explain to me just what exactly "clipping" is, what causes it, and if/how it can be repaired?
Thanks.  :)

Clipping, I believe is somewhat like "brickwalling"...although I hear the term used more with power amps...like when you drive one too hard and the red light comes on...you go "holy shit - that thing is clipping..." Kinda like the power runs out of room...

clipping: waveform reaches 0dB. can't go any furter. forms nice square-ish wave. not good overall, but minute clipping is inaudible.

CoolEdit and others have Clip Restoration features. works sometimes.

In addition to clipping in the recorded signal (as shown above) you can also experience clipping in your playback system even though the recording is not clipped.  If you drive your amp to the extent that the output waveform hits the limit of the amp, the generated output will flatten out just like in the picture above.   That is very bad for your speakers.

You can over drive an input anywhere along the chain from mic to speaker and clipping will occur at that stage.
