as an owner of both, the JB3 is the best for recording..
the IRIVEr doesn't encode the data right while recording..

iriver does make the nicest portable music players on the market I think (but the rio karma is nice too :P)
my 120 is sitting hear playin some jerry band for me right now
(much better then a stinking ipod :-*)

I have the H140.  I record with it.

Pros:  It's tiny, fits in your pocket.  It records to wav, and then is hard drive, plug and play, no sound card needed.  It's a nifty little music player too, with fm radio, .ogg support, all the shit you get from an iPod.

Cons:  74 minute file limit on recording, you gotta do a "flip".  Regular sample drops that bother some people, personally my ear can't hear it, but some have reported an audible "click" at regular intervals.  No recording levels while you are recording, so you'd have to get a separate meter to monitor your levels on the fly.

I think the JB3 is still the best option for a HDD recorder, but I do just fine with the iRiver.

Peace.

I taped next to a guy a month ago that had a 40GB (or 60... can't remember) and it had opti in and out.  I was wondering as well.  They certainly cost more.  $399 I think he said

i have an iriver h320- i havent used it to record anything yet, but i havent really had the chance,

when recording with a JB3 what is the setting you would use to record a lossless show, and does anyone know if that is possible with the iriver... it records at 320 kps... is that good?

sounds like mp3 to me.
WAV is the lossless format. 16/44.1 is the industry standard for CD audio (known as redbook)

mp3s are lossy so wav if you have that option.

The Iriver has Digital in and out, but as mentioned drops samples.   I now have both, bought the Iriver, sold it when the sample issue came up, bought the JB3, kept it and am taping with it and recently bought another Iriver because of the quality and flexibility as a player.  Rockbox development is slow, but definately going in the right direction.  What other DAP, besides Archos, can you play Gameboy with? None.  I was playing Scrabble today in my Iriver.  Talk about listening to the fan base, Rockbox is doing it right.  I think the Iriver will be an awesome machine if Rockbox can deliver everything they are setting out to accompish with relation to recording (recording allowable up to the 4gb limit, auto track split when recording, levels meter, on the fly level adjustment, fix sample drop issue).  Just as a player GUI, Rockbox has won me over.
