Hey there,
I've been using the Nomad 3 for a little over a year nad have never noticed any problems with any of my recordings. And problems I have had came from Taper Error.
I've been doing some research into the internal workings of the Nomad as I now have a second Nomad that needs a slight repair...
In doing this research, I've come across Jamie Lutch's tests and conclusions pertaining to the Nomad and he does not see it a "good recorder".
I'm wondering if the same view holds true today:
Do the more hard core folks still poo-poo the Nomad?
Do anyone here AVOID recordings made by Nomads??
Has anyone ever done more testing on the Nomad to reinforce or refute Jamie???
I've been looking at my Nomads and loving them, but also realize that they are just a stop-gap between DAT and the real pro-HD recorders out there - Creative just made a blunder that seemed to work for us.
I like my Nomad, but more and more, I want to invest in something more substantial, more beefy, something thats proven. DAT would be my first reaction, but its going by the way-side and the new HD recorders are out of my price range.
Anyone have any comments on this???
Thanks,
Terry

I would say some of them do, yes. I don't. Guess I'm not hard core. :)

Nope.

I performed ~100 hrs of JB3 v. DAT bit-transparency testing: V3 AES > Hosa ODL-312 > JB3 v. V3 coax S/PDIF > DAT. Results: 100% positive.

IMO, the JB3 *is* proven. At least at is in my book. It performed flawlessly during ~100 hrs of testing and has performed fantastically in the field for me.

NFW I'm going back to DAT at this point. Like you, my JB3 is a stop-gap until I can acquire an affordable, proven 24-bit HD recorder.

One thing I would like to add--Creative's QA department kind of sucks, so a lot of JB3's have come through that have problems right out of the box. IMO, every individual JB3 needs to prove itself--but once proven (and given you understand the quirks of your particular JB3) then you have no reason not to trust your JB3.
So, if you are just jumping into JB3 from DAT, it would be recommended to run both side by side for a bit until you've learned to trust your JB3.
My JB3 rocks.
-
Another note is that Jamies tests were done with very early firmware/drivers/software so back then it could have been a very valid statement to not trust the JB3. Given todays drivers/firmware/software I have had no issues with my personal JB3 in the field.
-
Jamie's tests were most certainly valid. I know Jamie, he's a great guy who's very intelligent... he wanted the JB3 to work as bad as anyone. Given the hardware he used (not the hosa boxes) and the software/firmware/drivers at the time the JB3 was not reliable. Things have changed significantly since then.

Darrin Sacks did some tests as well with the SBM > POC-DA12SP > NJB3 and found that it did not drop any data. It is what I use now. I even stealth with that combo (although it is a bit tricky managing the cable in my fanny pack). I have not noticed any problems with the set up at all (I have taped about 15 shows with it since getting it in Sept).
This is the absolute beauty of it all. I can start the recording well b4 I enter the venue. I have the DPA4061 > MPS > SBM level dialed in pretty much, so I never look at the levels. It is a 'no-brainer' style of stealthing. I jusy scored a slightly larger fanny pack and now can fit a Sonosax and M1 in there as well. I have run the M1 recently to serve soley as a means to check my levels (using the remote, not running tape). I ran it with a high degree of success at De La Soul and Citizen Cope last week.
The coolest part is getting the show out. Having IEEE1394 almost ensures the recording will get torrented within a week.

ditto...same setup here!

i love my jb3 and i mostly run it straight out of an ad500 or ad1000. i have the box for aes>opt, but would rather just tote my d8 along for patching and use the nomad for 'my' main deck. it's great with the sony cable or just a regular optical w/ right angle extension. So nice and easy.
i have even convinced my old roommate to get one as his d8 warrenty is almost up from servicemaster. it is slow going to convince him but he likes the firewire the best.

easiest, cheapest, most reliable...

Just want to echo everyone's sentiments above. I bought my first JB3 back in June, but hated having to use the HOSA box to convert coax>optical, and sold it a month or so later to go back to DAT. Now that I've got the optical mod V3...I can't imagine using anything else, at least untill the SD units come out.
Small size, bit perfect, extremely fast transfers, not anything I don't like about it.

A week? Sloan Simpson and Rob Clarke laugh at you...

I've have my stuff torrenting before noon the next day...sometimes before 9 AM..I can't resist...I gotta hear it. Plus...well...I typically roll with a "sliver" - so I'm usually still up... 8)

a sliver sounds interesting ;D

sounds like fun to me...

ya know

I also did many hours of bit accuracy tests using the UA-5 optical out.
The culprit in Jamie's tests was the 'grey box' converter that did not reliably translate coax > optical. Brian has proven that the Hosa box does.
My tests are here http://ca.geocities.com/dkleined@rogers.com/audio/bit/BitAccuracy.htm
