A friend of mine wants to record some multi layered guitar tracks on his PC. He wants to do this with a direct feed from his guitar straight into the CPU. What kind of CPU equipment and software would he need to produce a great sounding recording at a reasonable price? Here is what I am thinking. We looked at Creative Labs Platinum sound card ($198 @best buy). I also suggested a 120gig hard drive. I suggested using sound forge for the mixing.
Any input (equipment, software, and where to get them) would be greatly appreciated.

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) might be a better program for mixing, just because he can record each track separately and easily align (and re-align) them in that program...

It will be hard to do this:
produce a great sounding recording at a reasonable price?
when your doing this:
He wants to do this with a direct feed from his guitar straight into the CPU
To answer the question, you will need an interface that takes a hi-Z input. Whats your budget?
