How would you run it ? This is an arena - sized venue.
M-S ?
Blumlein ?
X-Y Cardioid, and if so at what angle ? 90^ ? Point at stack ?
My first takes:
Blumlein would seem to noisy. M-S would take some post, but I would do it, if worth the trouble.
My first guess was to go simply at X-Y and 90 degrees, but I'm definitely open for suggestions.

Assuming this is a stereo mic?
-
I'd run M/S personally.... you can get your tape perfectly dialed in after the show.
-
i agree. Being able to change the stereo width after the fact is cool as shit. i really don't like xy, too narrow of an image.
-
cards x/y 70* or m/s
-
having just run my lsd2 from the section using m/s, I can definitely say it's worth doing, I loved being able to optimize the stereo image after the fact -- be sure to set the mic up so that the left channel is the mid (card facing forward) and the right channel is the side (figure 8 pointing from side to side).
I used the built in pan/expand feature in soundforge to decode the m/s info -- interested in other's opinions on better programs/plugins for this function.
Have fun!

Waves has an MS decoder plugin (S1-MS Matrix), and Nuendo has Tools1 plugin built in. But i just do it the old fashioned way, clone the S+ chan to another track, flip the phase, and off you go...

Asian sort of copy of a Neumann SM-69, but runs on phantom.
Stereo mic, caps turn. caps are Omni (why?) figure-8, and cardioid
(http://www.sweetwater.com/images/items/LSD2.jpg)
(FWIW, Blumlein is also called Stereosonic....)

FYI, ran 70° Cards from the section (back end of Tweeter)
M-S wouldn't seem to have been much help as the main obstacle was the room's strong low bass resonance.
The side was a lot of bass echo, and I guess that I would had to cut it almost 100%
.......unless the figure8 would have phase cancelled it and cleaned it up some.
Should have tried one set M-S, but only had 2 to tape due to traffic hassles.

I've never used a stereo mic, and I guess I never gave it much thought, but you can change the included angle, eh? Interesting.

if you wanted to try one ive got my lsd2 for sale.

The sound is phat and accurate. Great low end extension with clear mids and great, open top end.
So far, I'm liking mine.
I want to play with it a LOT more.
Perhaps on solo guitar vocalist and in small chamber environments.
Also looking forward to a decent venue to tape in or at least a good placement.
Tim, if you want to try one around NJ, let me know. Have rig, will travel. ;)
You can grab a patch out of the FR-2t or I'll patch from you.
I'm happy to show off the new toy.
If you like it, buy John's, I doubt that I'm parting with mine very soon.
I'd have bought his, but it got confusing just before SCI/RRE Camden, so I got one from the Oade's,
which showed up, Fed-Ex, at 5PM Saturday afternoon. I unwrapped it inside the Tweeter. :o
BTW, the SCI show is in the kickdown section.............

hehe, at first glance I thought you where asking a question about doing LSD in the section, which usually isn't the best idea ;D

Especially at my age.
LSD = Large Stereo Diaphragm Condenser Microphone AKA "All your diaphragm belong to stereo" ;D

I saw that mic flying but I never made it over to ask what you were running. Cool new toys.
-
LSD = $%#^@% Good trip... Only kidding
I would run the LSD in M/S for the application Ohm is asking...but I would also experiment as each room is different...
-
Alan:
Agreed -- I've found that running the lsd2 in m/s and not decoding on the fly allows me to optimize the pickup pattern after the fact by decoding the m/s info on my pc in a controlled environment.
Great mic!

Great mic!
Thanks... To get into this kind of mic before the LSD-2, you would have to spend thousands.... So, while not a Neumann, it is not far from it, but way behind it in affordabilty which allows more users to get into a mic like this.... The best part is using it!
Glad you like it.... :)

Alan:
Didn't you previously allude at some point to a possible upgrade for the LSD2 in the near future? Any hints?

Yes, I did, but no firm date as of yet....
-
Alan:
Any hints on what the upgrade might entail/do? I'm patient and in no rush, but remain intrigued :)

Darrin - love that tape of BBFT from the Fillmore, sounds very nice... good work!
btw - the Carver sounds pretty nice, I think there's definitely a sweet spot where the sound kind of opens up... thanks for the loaner :)
-
Tim - glad the carver's working out for you -- sounds like you fixed your speaker problem too ?
I forgot to give you the carver's remote -- you're welcome to drop by and pick it up.
Also, thanks for the comments on the flecktones recording, I was REALLY impressed with how it turned out too -- looking forward to getting a LOT more use out of this combo.
-
a remote owuld make my life much better 8)

Tim:
other than 2 different evening commitments keeping me from hitting any shows this weekend, I'll be around . . .
-
sounds good... thanks Darrin :)

LSD-2 comments:
Instruction book blows. - period. All Your Large Stereo Diaphragm belong to us !
Book covers all Studio Projects mics in about two pages in English(sort of)
I got the mic at 5PM as I was heading out the door to a show that I wanted to tape.
Unpacked it for the first time there.
Markings on the instrument are cryptic and the articulating capsule required tape to ensure position when putting on windscreen.
Some form of dual-protractor sticker around it could be very helpful, I've handmade one for my field use. Also forward-facing marker.
Shockmount inner basket holding mic via spring tension is a weakness, machinists invented threads many, many years ago.
(on the plus side, it is a snap to put up) Mic screening could be "beefier."
Big pluses for the sound, quite good as X-Y cardioid, tried Stereosonic(Blumlein) on ambient piano room and loved it.
Yet to play M-S, but am looking forward to it. I see M-S as requiring the right placement and space to be truly effective.
Why would anyone want a dual capsule omni ? Am I missing something there, is it for redundancy or just extra channel ?
More pluses on the included extra shockmount cords, thoughtful. Shockmount hooks are better than some others that I've seen.
I do not see hyper-cardioid as an advantage to this mic. Are they planning to make it in a tube version ? Add sub-card ?
Despite a few initial quirks, as all mics have, this is an amazing unit. And ease of use makes it very handy.
The sound is amazing. Did I say that already ? X-Y on acoustic guitar a few feet from sounding board is very warm and nice.
