Title: mbho matching?
Post by: caymanreview on November 25, 2004, 12:25:21 PM
are the mbho's actually "matched"?

would consecutive serial numbers be the closest thing to matching?

my bodies are consecutively numbered but my caps are 4 numbers apart... i havent got to run them yet, so im not sure if/how muich they are off

should i have paperwork to verify they are matched if they are truely matched straight from mbho?

I think serial numbers are the closest thing they get to actual matching. FWIW, my bodies were one number apart and the caps were 3 away from each other...and were pretty much dead on perfectly matched.

right on, thats what i wanted to hear. the kid i bought them (mike rollinson- ween taper) from said they were "matched" but i got nothing with them saying so

any ideas on what to store them in while in my bag besides the cases they came with? ideally id like to ahve something simillar to a pelican 1060 where i can have my xlrs and actives hooked up all the time and have the actives/caps stored in the film canisters like yours. they are a touch too long for the pelican 1060, but id like to keep the package as small as possible

There's a million different size Tupperware containers that would probably work. Just put some foam in and that should do the trick. You'll have to cut holes in either side of the box (you'd have to with the 1060 as well), but that's no biggie.

I'd take a trip down to the local Wal-Mart/Target/K-Mart and see what they've got. You'd be amazed...every size, shape, depth, and width imaginable.

thats a great idea. it will always stay in my bag so it wont be in the line of danger

il also be looking at the small slim tackle boxes. i once had one that fit my 480s perfectly, not sure if i can find one that is small enough and long enough (~10")

they do matching, at least they use to. When I got my MBHO's about 2 years ago they where a matched pair....consecutive serial numbers has nothing to do with it.

i know it technically has nothing to do with it. but at least they wer emanufactured on the same line and all that jazz, that has got to help that they were manufactured close to each other from a same batch of materials

is the US importer for MBHO.
I talked to a guy named Marcus Demuth over there when I wanted to get my Josephson KA-20 capsules looked at and matched better.

I sent the caps to Marcus, who sent them to Mr. Haun in Germany.
It only cost me $75.00 for the matching and $20.00 freight.

I was VERY pleased with the results. My capsules came back looking like new. I could never get Mr. Haun or Marcus to tell me exactly what was done, but the looked and sounded much better when I got them back. The backs of them were obviously changed out with some new "guts."

If you need to have them looked at for any reason, I would recommend contacting them. I was very happy I did.

If I remember, it was about 6 weeks. It would have been shorter, but my timing in shipping was off. Marcus was doing international shipping on like a 2-3 a month basis, and I missed his ship day, so they sat in NY for a week or two. Also, they missed the return ship back from Germany by a week.  It was still very much worth it!

been meaning to ask...what do you think of the MBHO's Cayman?

weel they look nice ;) and it is a super small setup from what ive had since bfore the summer (TL's)

my v3 has been out to grace for the opti mod since the day before i got these :) so i have yet to even test em out at home

for the last few months i have had a pretty regular shows here locally, and now nothing, so i figured it was a good tiem to ditch the hosa box and get the opti mod.

then i realize i have a local show on satuday that i REALLY want to tape. but with the holiday liek this i most likely wont get my v3 back on saturday like most have been arriving back on after a tuesday mod.

if i get it back, il be taping, if not i might not make the drive

i also have some 184s and a mmp here right now, its a shame my v3 is out!

I would like to try those LD omni caps that mbho makes.

those do look nice. ive got my eyes on a fig8 cap to do MS. i do alot of MS with the local acoustic bluegrass band and it sounds fantastic.

i know of no one that has run the mbho fig 8 cap tho

know of anyone that has run anything besides the cards/hypers?

I have the LD omnis whcih are great but if you have the cards already but are looking for an upgrade from the taper's section, get the hypers! The KA500Hs are a very sound investment.

you are absolutely the only person who has told me that! sleepypedro said they are a total waste of money!

do you have any experience with any other caps besides cards/hypers/ld omni's?

at the moment im looking at a fig 8 cap to do MS (my new fav config as of late)

fwiw, im looking for upgrades that will affect 80% of what i tape, which is local jambands/bluegrass

at this point i tape more acoustic bluegrass more than anything. my fav for them with my TL's was MS on-stage... but ive never tried omni's with them

Never used the fig 8 caps. Rarely do I get the chance to split omnis onstage so I use the cards and hypers most of the time. If I'm close up or at least semi-close in a nice sounding room, I use the cards. From the section or even in small clubs that sounds like ass, the hypers get the nod. I have really noticed the difference in big rooms where I used to use the cards but now have a better option with the hypers.

I got the ka500h's last year and would hardly say they're a waste.  I've used them in a few different venues and am happy with the results.  They were pretty cheap too.  The only mbho tapes I have are with the ka200n and ka500h caps.

Hi,

I am a french taper, mostly classical music.

Here is a copy of a recent post I wrote on rec.audio.pro :

Groupes de discussion :rec.audio.pro
Date :2004-08-19 01:43:53 PST

Here is my recent experience with MBHO :
I bought a few years ago a pair of omni (KA100D) and cardio (KA200)
caps in France to record classical concerts with  Jecklin disk and
ORTF. The seller didn't offer matched pair. The omni pair was really
not matched. I sended it back and the new pair was better, but... For
the price, i thought i couln't have something better. The cardio pair
was almost matched but noisy. I lived with this and rented KM184
sometimes...

This automn, i'll have some critical recordings, so this summer I
contacted Amptec in Germany witch is the MBHO partner. With the
agreement of M.Haun of MBHO, they just advise me to send my caps
directly to MBHO. I did that. Two weeks later I received my four caps
from MBHO. It was the same caps, but all the membranes have been
changed. I tried them (violin, piano, voices, measurements...) . It
was like night and day... the two pairs are matched within 2 db on all
the band-width, the noise is very low and similar for all caps and
moreover the tone is flatter and more natural. All that for 13 euros
(sending cost) and with a delay of 15 days.

Thanks to M.Haun (i sould have do that earlier...).

Jean-Marie

I had a very similair experience.
I sent unmatched caps to Mr. Haun in Germany and they came back sounding much better.
