optical 7-pin Sony POC-DA12P

or

opti-mod your sbm-1 (think these plans are for output on a d8 but could be adapted to Tx out of a sbm-1)

does an sbm1 control the record levels in this proposed setup?

very much so.

very much so.

so, besides the dreaded +17db, what is the difference (in function, not sound) between the sbm1 and an AD-20?

-no preamp - you use the line input
-perfect match for sony dat machines but can be made to work with other recorders
-smaller
-better powering options and a battery life indicator
-level knobs can move in unison
-not as robust

thanks.   I think I need one of these w/ an optical output for an NJB3.  that would solve all my problems, I do believe.  I could then run  mics ->battery box -> SMB1 -> NJb3, and control the levels on the sbm1...

thanks again for answering my questions zhiao

find a way to do that and you'll be made in the shade!
i'll have to wait another 12 hours for you ;)

edit: just don't use a battery box with 853s! there have been many threads on this subject in the last few months.

No way!  I want to do this setup w/ 4061s.   :P

a previous message from Simp in another thread says he has a todd-mod sbm1 - is the todd-mod a mod to give it an optical output?  is this todd person around doing mods still?

attaboy, rock those 4061s!
todd ramsden is on this board! he does a different line stage mod to the sbm than the oades. i don't think he still does it, though. might want to ask him.

Do they make a cable that is 7pin on one end, and optical on the other end that can be used w/ this and an njb3?

as i understand it, such cables are prone to fuckups in the field and are not recommended... that's why i said that you need to find a way to make friends between the sbm and jb3 - they're not natural pals. i'm sure people around here do it or have done it, though.

thanks.  optical input on the njb3 blows.  limits the a/d's you can use way too much.  maybe oade can mod a stock one to have an optical output.

or a hosa... but I want less boxes!

right. the fewer the boxes, the better.
i think there's a tutorial on doing the opti-mod yourself somewhere. i wouldn't trust myself to do it right, but you might want to look into it. it's possible.

found one for coax, but not for opti.   I don't think I'd try it anyways... I emailed Doug Oade - we'll see what he says.

How about modding the JB3 for coax? You'd probably have to destroy the analog in and optical to do this, but I don't see any reason why not, except for fitting it in the case.

FWIW...i use the optical 7-pin Sony POCDA12P cable from sbm tp jb3 and it works fine.

yeah, it seems a little fragile, but it is way easier than carrying an extra hosa box and at $85 it costs just a little more than a hosa box & power for the hosa.
