Title: Mic Configuration's ???'s
Post by: rowjimmytour on December 09, 2004, 05:46:46 PM
I am going to record in a bar/rest and I would like to try to set up my mics a foot or so in front of the stage. This place has tables on the floor so you have to seft up LFOB so I think I can fly my mics at 4-5' height right in front of the stage. I was wondering what caps to use (cards or omni) ? and what configuration to go for ? Last time I was 20' away LFOB at about 9' height w/ cards XY. I definetly think I can score a better recording w/ my C4's. Oh, by the way I am taping New Monsoon and Hot Buttered Rum String Band.Thanks.
Peace

Omnis would work pretty well...the cards, from that distance, may restrict your bass a bit...the warmth of your C4s may be limited from that close, but with the cards you might lack the lows.

Also, sent you a PM on an unrelated note...

I'm confused, where do you want to setup? Specifically how far back?

In a bar I'd be inclined to use the most directional cap available to cut back on the reflections from the walls and the crowd a bit.

my opinion might change though when I better understand where you want to setup.

I plan on setting up as FOB as I can but they might have tables front and center like they did last time :(So I might need to set up feet away from the stage skirt and only 4'-5' height. The tables are set up in the middle of the floor and are reserved for large parties who are dinning at the show so you have to becareful for waiter leekage ie: dishes, eating, etc on your recording.
Peace

I wouldn't be concerned about bass response from the cards .. in a noisy bar/restaurant I wouldn't run omni's.

def run the cards ORTF or XY.  The C4 omni's can be a bit dark at times, plus you'll pick up too much extranious noise.

Thanks all!!! And born again taper I changed my signature just for ya because I am a BAT too and now I have bigger and better toyz to play with. I think the cards in ORTF @90 or 110 well probally be my setup.

If you're going to be able to get that close to the stage, why not just fly them in ORTF directly in front of the stacks?
